Emma Roberts was so eager for a digital detox in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, she forgot her No. 1 must-have carry-on item: makeup remover wipes.
"I never forget them, I cannot believe it. I was scrubbing my face with a washcloth last night," the former "Scream Queens" star tells me with a Chanel Oberlin-worthy eye roll as we look out at the ocean from our private cabana at the Dreams Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort.
In March 2025, I traveled to Mexico with a small group of journalists to experience Pages in Paradise, a travel program developed by Apple Vacations, Penguin Random House, and Roberts' own Belletrist book club to hook up participating resorts with curated libraries, as well as book-themed cocktail hours based on Belletrist's book of the month.
"Every time I come to Mexico, all I want to do is read by a pool and get off my phone," the actor tells me during a one-on-one chat. "I always remember the books that I found on vacation, so I love that this library is gonna create lasting memories. There's something really analog and kismet and fun about just grabbing a book off a shelf that speaks to you."
So far, all is going according to Roberts's plan, with the exception of her missing makeup wipes. It's the second day of our trip and the two of us are currently sitting by a private pool that's just a short walk away from the Belletrist-approved library nestled inside the all-inclusive resort's 24-hour café and gelato bar. Once she finishes our chat and an obligatory photoshoot, Roberts plans to run straight into the ocean - and she probably won't be washing her hair for the rest of the trip.
"I try not to wash my hair on vacation. I put my hair into braids and jump in the ocean," she says. "That's what I do instead of shampoo and conditioner."
Roberts is unwilling to risk mixing hotel products with her freshly dyed "sunrise red" hair. "I've washed my hair when I've just dyed it and it's turned a crazy color," she says. "When I have blond hair it's turned yellow, and when I've had red hair it washes it all out. So I get so scared to really give my hair a real wash."
Roberts tells me she's gone as long as five days without washing her hair on a trip. "I try to get a blowout the day before I leave for vacation, and then I will ride that blowout into the dry-shampoo end."
When it comes to dry shampoo, Roberts trusts Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo ($52) and R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo ($37). Both offer travel sizes. "I don't care, I just dry-shampoo and jump in the ocean," she reiterates. "I have no shame about it . . . Nothing looks better than saltwater hair."
The rest of Roberts's travel makeup routine is similarly low maintenance. "When I'm on vacation, I just do a little concealer, a little waterproof mascara, and I'm good to go," she says, recommending the Kiko Milano Maxi Mod Mascara ($18). "And then I love a little berry lip stain that also doubles as a cheek tint."
Roberts has served as a Kiko ambassador since May 2024 and swears by its "amazing" sheet masks, saying, "I feel like those are a must, and those can go in the carry-on."
After spending most of our time discussing makeup and books - Roberts suggests I pick up "The Husbands" by Holly Gramazio, which I devoured in three days and absolutely did not take home in my carry-on - I can't help but point out it feels like we've been sucked into a secret fourth season of "The White Lotus," a prospect Roberts would very much like to be a part of.
"I'm unwell from 'The White Lotus,'" she says. "I want to be on next season, but that's such a dumb thing to say because who doesn't?" Even so, Roberts would love to play the show's next murder victim, adding, "I'll just be the body."
"The White Lotus" creator Mike White could probably come up with a better part for Roberts than that, given her extensive résumé of TV and film roles she's been building since the age of nine. At this very moment, she looks poised to portray a vacationing Hollywood starlet in her white oval sunglasses, red cardigan, and adorable white polka-dot shorts that she's excited to exchange for a swimsuit.
Of course, Roberts is plenty busy at the moment, between parenting her four-year-old son, Rhodes; starring in the upcoming rom-com "Marriage Material"; and producing multiple projects under Belletrist Productions, including the popular Hulu series "Tell Me Lies," which has been renewed for a third season.
You'll have to forgive her for ever skipping the first season of something to keep up with the discourse. "I'm always late to the party," she says. "I always read and watch things after everyone's already talked about it, and then everyone's like, 'Shut up, we've already talked about it.' So I was late to 'The White Lotus' and now I'm totally addicted."
Roberts is, however, good at keeping up with her favorite reality TV shows. "I was first to see Mike White on 'Survivor,' and fell in love with him there," she says of the HBO writer's turn on the long-running adventure series. "I think I would do well on 'Survivor,' because I do well under pressure."
Though Roberts wouldn't share her strategy in case the theoretical becomes reality, she says attending an "all-girls summer camp in the middle of nowhere" each summer was her training ground. "That is survivor," she says. "My girlies who went to summer camp - real summer camp, not bougie summer camp - we're ruthless."
She adds, "I don't need as many glamorous things as I think people think."
