LA JOLLA – A longstanding tradition of celebrating Independence Day in style continues throughout La Jolla on Friday, July 4. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will hold its third annual eco-friendly drone show along with two homespun neighborhood parades — Beaumont Avenue in Bird Rock, and the Beach-Barber Tract.

Drone show

In collaboration with the LJ STEAM Foundation, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club at La Jolla Shores is returning its Fourth of July drone show for a third year.

Only this time, the club plans to make its drone display even more impressive.

“Last year’s show was an incredible success, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and community supporters,” said William J. Kellogg, president of the LJB&T Club.

“This year, we’re taking it to the next level by doubling the number of drones for an even more spectacular display. We hope to build on that same spirit of support to keep this tradition alive and free for everyone to enjoy.”

As this innovative, environmentally-friendly alternative to fireworks continues to grow, public donations are needed to fund the show and ensure it remains a part of La Jolla’s tradition.

Contributions will go toward the LJ STEAM Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing science, technology, education, arts, and music in La Jolla. Businesses and individuals can make tax-deductible contributions at ljsteam.org or mail checks to the LJ STEAM Foundation at 7742 Herschel Ave., Suite L, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Donations should be designated for the Fourth of July drone show fund.

The drone display will start at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 4. It will feature 500 synchronized drones soaring 350 feet above the shoreline. Spectators can expect a choreographed performance to patriotic music, capturing the spectacle of a fireworks show without the environmental impact.

The primary public viewing area will be at the south end of Kellogg Park, 8277 Camino Del Oro in La Jolla Shores, with additional vantage points throughout the surrounding beach and park areas near the La Jolla Shores Hotel and La Jolla Cove.

Beaumont Avenue Parade

Bird Rock is holding its homegrown Fourth of July parade and community celebration for the 46th time this July 4, starting at 10 a.m. at the corner of Camino de la Costa and Beaumont Avenue, ending at Mira Monte.

The family- and neighborhood-oriented Beaumont Avenue Fourth of July Parade features children in patriotic garb walking, riding trikes, bikes, scooters, and riding on floats down the parade route.

Following the parade, there will be an Independence Day celebration and party behind the La Jolla Methodist Church at 6063 La Jolla Blvd. with food, carnival games, live band Red Headed Stepchild, and other entertainment, including family activities.

Residents are also encouraged every year to decorate their homes in patriotic colors.

The neighborhood parade is planned by the Bird Rock Parade Committee.

The parade was founded in 1980 by several neighbors, including Buddy and Barbara Murfey, who are the parents of local contractors Russ and Scott Murfey. The brothers later helped organize the parade and continued to be intricately involved in planning and staging it.

Of the homemade celebration of the nation’s birthday, Sarah Eve Austin, parade co-chair along with Jason Hill, said: “The community is involved, and every year that gets stronger. This year, the big focus is on keeping up this great tradition. Year after year, individuals and families have participated. We’ve seen Bird Rock families change, kids grow, volunteers return, and new Bird Rock families join in.”

Austin said, “Organizers really tried to strengthen our parade committee this year by adding additional community members who are planning to stay long-term.”

Austin also owns the distinction of being this year’s parade grand marshal.

The theme of this year’s parade is Wild Wild West. “So bring your boots, hats, and of course, your red, white, and blue,” Austin said. “We’re excited about the parade this year. It’s going to be fun.”

Beach-Barber Tract Parade

The Barber Tract neighborhood in La Jolla, just north of Bird Rock, will hold its Fourth of July parade following its traditional route. The event will begin with a resident’s patriotic speech, followed by music and residents marching down Monte Vista, Fern Glen, and Olivetas streets, then returning to White Sands Retirement Community.

This year, the parade will also feature children’s activities.

For decades, this annual, quaint homespun Independence Day parade has been a cherished tradition, noted Kurt Iuli-Kinsey, Barber Tract Neighborhood Association president.

“It was started by Max Elliott, our Uncle Sam, who kicks off the event with a little speech,” said Iuli-Kinsey. “People bring their dogs, their wagons, and some dress up.”

The parade was begun by Elliott more than 45 years ago after moving to the neighborhood, according to Iuli-Kinsey, because “he wanted something to connect the kids that summer and do something patriotic and fun. And it has just continued ever since.”
