ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Major construction is underway in the Beechwood neighborhood, where new housing is being developed. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake reported from Garson Avenue, detailing the project aimed at providing 54 low-income families with energy-efficient homes.
The Beechwood Family Apartments will be spread across 21 lots, featuring single-family homes, duplexes, and townhomes with up to four bedrooms. This type of housing is typically harder to find and more expensive.
“Projects like this are extremely important to the Beechwood neighborhood. We are a historically disinvested community that has been targeted by redlining. This project is an example of righting those wrongs of history,” said Dr. Lashunda Lesli-Smith, executive director of Connected Communities.
Megan Houppert, CEO of Home Leasing, said, “What this project really tried to accomplish is creating housing opportunities that are very hard to find in Rochester. Housing opportunities that can home multigenerational houses, homes with children. We really wanted to create that opportunity in Beechwood.”
The development aims to elevate the entire neighborhood, not just those seeking low-income housing. The groups behind the project emphasized that these homes are meant to be attractive and, above all, safe.
The homes are expected to be move-in ready by October 2025. Water, trash pickup, and internet will be covered by Home Leasing at no additional cost to residents. Interested applicants must make up to 30, 50, or 60 percent of the area median income.
