EFL giants face possible player walkout as longer transfer embargo looms ...Middle East

Sheffield Wednesday’s players could walk out of the club as further punishment looms for the EFL giants.

The Owls, who were hit with a three-window transfer embargo on June 18, may now be facing even more consequences.

Reports claim that part of the squad have not been paid their wages on time yet again, following two previous instances.

Some of Sheffield Wednesday’s younger players have been paid, but not all of the squad received their salaries, according to The Guardian.

The affected players are said to have been contacted by the club, as they apologised and pledged to pay them in full.

The Owls’ current transfer embargo was put into place by the EFL following late payments to players.

So, with this happening again for June’s payout, further sanctions could be set to follow.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri apologised for charges handed to the club a few weeks ago, but things continue to worsen.

A huge concern that follows this particular late payment though, is that players will be allowed to walk away from the club.

FIFA player regulations state that any player who has not received their contract salary on the due date for two successive months can terminate their deal by giving their employer notice in writing.

As this has happened in May and in June, Sheffield Wednesday’s players will now likely have this option.

However, the club can prevent this from happening if they make the necessary payment within 15 days to regain control of the player’s contract.

Even if they do this though, the late payment means the EFL could well act and hand out more punishment.

Sheffield Wednesday legend Barry Bannan could be one of the stars to depart, should the players decide to walk out.

Bannan’s contract is running out and Wrexham have been interested.

And on top of a potential exodus in the squad, owner Chansiri looks likely to have to find a new manager too.

Danny Rohl is in talks to depart Hillsborough due to the ongoing financial issues at the club preventing him from strengthening his team for the future.

He did not take charge of the Owls’ first day of pre-season training, with his backroom staff out of contract on Tuesday.

Rohl has been linked to a move to relegated Leicester City, who sacked Ruud van Nistelrooy last week.

The German’s predicted departure and now the likelihood of a new EFL charge leaves Sheffield Wednesday in dire straits heading into the new season.

Their new Championship campaign begins on Sunday, August 10.

They will take on Leicester, who could well have Rohl in the dugout.

But by then, players could have decided to walk out on the club should they not manage to turn their financial issues around.
