Wimbledon will offer players some respite from the intense heat that has been forecast for the start of this year’s tournament.
Monday marks the opening day of tennis’ oldest and most prestigious event in south west London.
Wimbledon is finally here, but brace yourself for some high temperaturesGettyThe unpredictability of British weather often brings rain delays to the action, but day one of the 2025 Championships will be very different.
As forecasted by the Met Office, temperatures look set to reach highs of 32 degrees Celsius at the All England Club, which would well exceed an opening day record.
And Wimbledon will help their players to cope with the heat through the implementation of a rule that’s rarely used at the tournament.
Men’s, women’s, boy’s, girl’s, men’s wheelchair, women’s wheelchair and quad wheelchair singles matches will all have the Heat Rule.
Should the Welt Bulb Globe Temperature [WBGT] hit or exceed 30.1 degrees Celsius, a ten-minute break will be allowed.
It will apply after the second set of all best-of-three matches, whilst best-of-five matches will have it after the third set.
Players are permitted to leave the court during this break, although coaching or medical treatment is prohibited.
Air temperature, humidity and surface temperature are the factors that apply to the heat index, measured by a heat stress monitor.
Readings by the WBGT are taken half an hour before play, and then between 2pm and 5pm.
The Heat Rule applies to all matches, even if they’re ongoing, and a request needs to be made by just one player for it to be issued.
The Heat Rule will give players a break from the tough conditionsGetty Clear skies will add even more exposure to the sunGettyShould the rule be lifted by a change in weather conditions, it will still be applicable to matches that are still being played.
However, matches played under the roofs of courts such as Centre Court and No. 1 Court are exempt.
The high temperatures are forecast to arrive at around 2pm, which is when many of the opening day matches will be played.
Just half an hour before then, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will begin his title defence against Fabio Fognini on Centre Court.
Emma Raducanu is also in action later in the day and faces fellow Brit Mimi Xu in the first round.
Whilst Monday’s heat levels are still forecast to be high, Tuesday looks likely to be even hotter as per the Met Office.
Whilst the tournament gets off to a hot start, there could be rain later in the weekGetty The heat could become unbearable at timesGettyIt could reach 33 degrees Celsius on day two, so the Heat Rule will be introduced for a second consecutive day.
Men’s singles world no. 1 Jannik Sinner plays Luca Nardi, whilst 2024 women’s champion Barbora Krejcikova meets Alexandra Eala that day.
