Former India coach Greg Chappell has ruled that the team did not lose the ENG vs IND 1st Test due to poor fielding but because of their bowling attack. Shubman Gill, who played his first Test as the new captain, started off his stint on a losing note as India were handed a 5-wicket thrashing in Leeds. Chappell advised India to make some amends to their playing XI while pointing out some red flags as well.
Kuldeep in, Jadeja out
In his column for ESPNCricinfo, Chappell said that India had lost due to self inflected damages, pointing out that they had no variety in their bowling attack. He said that Gill should bring in Kuldeep Yadav for the ENG vs IND 2nd Test, whom he deemed as the probably the best wristspinner since Shane Warne. Chappell also recommended that Arshdeep Singh be included in the playing XI.
“There is a reason why wickets often fall after a change of bowling. It forces the batter to recalibrate. That variability isn’t available to Shubman Gill with his current crop. Without Bumrah, I’d like to see left-armer Arshdeep Singh added to the mix and Kuldeep Yadav, possibly the best wristspinner since Shane Warne, included in the attack,” Chappell wrote.
Chappell claimed that Ravindra Jadeja, who was India’s sole spinner in the 1st Test, wasn’t a frontline bowler in the English conditions. He said that Jadeja could be considered in the XI as a support spinner who’s batting is good and if otherwise should be left out.
“Jadeja is not a front-line spinner in English conditions. If his batting is considered good enough, he can be a support spinner; otherwise a rethink is necessary. If India are to reverse their fortunes in this series then a better balanced team is required,” Chappell added.
Overdependence on Bumrah
Chappell also flagged the need for the Indian bowlers (barring Bumrah) to be more disciplined. He reckoned that currently all England needed to do to ward off pressure while facing Bumrah and the rest was going to be a cakewalk. He said that all the Indian seamers apart from Bumrah were similar – “right-arm, medium-fast, operating at comparable angles..”
“Even with Bumrah in the mix, the rest of the attack has to be more disciplined. I didn’t see two consecutive balls land in a dangerous place. They were either too full, too short or too wide. Bowlers have to work in partnerships as much as batters. All England have to do at present is to see off Bumrah and they know the pressure will go with him,” Chappell wrote.
