Even before the India squad for the England Test series was picked, there were numerous reports suggesting that Shreyas Iyer was in no contention for a place in the side. Not only was that true, but then the batter did not even get picked for the India A series vs England Lions, preceding the Test series.
Shreyas Iyer is in Que
That raised the questions, if Shreyas Iyer was even in contention, and will he ever be in contention, in the future? After all, the 30-year-old had solid performances throughout the domestic season last year, and was also the highest run-getter in India’s Champions Trophy winning campaign.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that Shreyas Iyer’s time will come, but he will have to wait for some time for sure. There is a long que for only a handful of spots. He also said, the likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel are also finding it tough to break into the side, despite performances.
Sarfaraz Khan & Dhruv Jurel Ahead in Pecking Order
“Shreyas Iyer won’t get a chance now. Many others haven’t gotten a chance either,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel. “If you think about it, Karun Nair has only just gotten his chance. Sarfaraz Khan hasn’t been given a shot. Dhruv Jurel is waiting on the sidelines. If he cannot even get among those who are in the waiting line, then how can he be considered for selection?”
Just for the record, Shreyas scored 480 runs in the seven innings of Ranji Trophy, where his runs came at an average of 68. More importantly, his strike rate was over 90. Then he also had his best season in the IPL as a batter, where he scored 604 runs in 17 matches.
“I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final, did well in white-ball cricket — but his time will come in Tests. He will have to wait just a little bit.”
