Andy Reid stepped in to protect Patrick Mahomes after Chiefs star went too far and intense fight broke out ...Middle East

Andy Reid will have a checklist of things he wants to see when the Kansas City Chiefs hit training camp in July.

Patrick Mahomes getting involved in fights will not be one of them after he was forced to step in twice in 2024.

Mahomes loves to be in the thick of things

The first incident saw linebacker Drue Tranquill lose his head during a play before Mahomes — wearing a yellow non-contact jersey — came charging in to pull him away.

“My favorite thing is when Chiefs players process that it’s Mahomes holding them back and have to dial back their struggling by a factor of 100 because their career is on the line,” remarked a member of Chiefs Kingdom on X at the time.

A week later, Tranquill was involved again during the long drive drill — a Reid special that sees the offense edge five yards down the field every play regardless of how many they picked up on the previous scrimmage.

It is a gruelling slog in the summer heat and tempers often flare.

Linebacker Jack Cochrane, who was punched by Travis Kelce in a separate incident a year earlier, clashed with running back Isiah Pacheco after a play and got into a shoving match.

Mahomes came flying in once again, getting between his teammates in the hope that he could de-escalate the situation.

Big Red strolled onto the field behind his assistants to calm things down before resuming the drill.

Tranquill managed to keep out of Mahomes’ way this time, but could be seen taunting the offense with his hand over his crotch during the video.

The Chiefs were chasing an unprecedented three-peat at the time, something even Tom Brady‘s iconic New England Patriots dynasty couldn’t pull off.

Reid’s team fell one game short as the Philadelphia Eagles dominated a surprisingly one-sided Super Bowl.

Mahomes is possibly the only person equipped to rival Brady’s seven rings and Kelce thinks he is already the better GOAT.

After a vintage Mahomes performance in the AFC Championship game in January, the tight end was full of praise.

“It’s been such a pleasure,” Kelce said. “He’s every bit of a superstar off the field as he is on the field. I consider him family.

“There’s one common denominator from the Chiefs my entire career and that’s Andy Reid, but this thing really took off when Patrick Mahomes got here.

“I know everybody knows that, but what I see in the building, his leadership, his ability to relate to everybody and motivate everybody, and be accountable, it’s unique, and it’s like nothing else.

“He’s the greatest to ever do it. You can’t change my mind, otherwise.”

Mahomes has three wins from five trips to the biggest game in football, and plenty of years to fill his remaining digits.

Reid would love nothing more than to get him there.

The Chiefs’ head coach has revealed that Brady reached out to Mahomes after the New England Patriots’ overtime win over Kansas City in the 2018 AFC Championship game.

“I was there when Tom Brady said, ‘I’m turning the keys over to you,'” Reid told NFL Network in 2024.

“He did it right in our locker room. And so I think Tom is as proud as anybody.”

Reid also added that he believes Mahomes has embraced being the best in the league.

“He makes the difficult look easy at the highest possible level in the whole world,” Reid said.

“There’s only 32 in the whole world, and he’s the special of the special. I watched Tom Brady turn the keys over to him, which was cool. Tom said, ‘Hey, this is your league now, man.'”

Mahomes will be back on the field ahead of his ninth NFL season in July.

He sat the first, and has made it at least as far as the AFC Championship game in every campaign as a starter.

That kind of consistency is no accident and would also be impossible to replace, which is why Big Red is so desperate to keep him out of trouble.
