The renewal of the Mizzou-Illinois Braggin’ Rights rivalry series has been trimmed from 8 games to 6, it was revealed Thursday.

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman shared the development during a media opportunity. The programs had planned for a pair of home-and-home 4-game series from 2026-29 and 2032-35. The rivalry renewal, however, will now begin in 2027, as the 2026 game has been canceled. The meeting for 2032 was also scrapped.

Mizzou and Illinois have faced each other 24 times in football, dating all the way back to 1896. Thanks to conference scheduling, the gridiron edition of the Braggin’ Rights game has been played in bunches instead of a regular annual contest.

The longest annual stretch was 1975-84. It then saw renewals for 4 meetings from 1991-94, 2 meetings in 2002-03 and 4 again 2007-10. Mizzou won the 2010 game 23-13.

The last 6 meetings were in St. Louis, but the 2027-29 and 2033-35 are set to be played at home stadiums instead of neutral-site venues.
