The future of men’s tennis is poised to be dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

However, American tennis icon John McEnroe believes there’s a select trio who could upset the apple cart in the coming years.

According to McEnroe, teenage prodigies Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca have the potential to break through, as does America’s Ben Shelton.

“One of those two guys or Ben would be my choice right now,” McEnroe said.

“I think it would be important to get another guy or two to add to the mix.

“That would be really helpful.”

It will take something special to break up the stranglehold Alcaraz and Sinner have enjoyed in men’s tennis.

The duo have evenly split the last six available Grand Slam singles titles, with Alcaraz the most recent victor as he overcame Sinner in an instant classic at the French Open.

In fact, Novak Djokovic is the only man outside of Sinner and Alcaraz to have won a Grand Slam singles crown since Wimbledon 2022.

But with Djokovic well into the twilight of his career at age 38 and his last Major coming at the 2023 US Open, it has never been more evident we’re now in the era of Alcaraz and Sinner.

However, McEnroe felt if one of Fonseca, Mensik or Shelton can elevate themselves to Sinner and Alcaraz’s level, it could represent the reincarnation of the Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal rivalry at the top of the sport.

“It’s going to be an interesting time to see if there’s another player or two who can break in with those two the way Novak did when he was trying to get to the same level as Roger and Rafa,” McEnroe said.

“It shows you what type of a player he was that he was able to do that.

“But right now, there’s a void.”

There is plenty of buzz surrounding 18-year-old Fonseca, who won the US Open boys’ singles in 2023.

He went on to cause a monumental upset at this year’s Australian Open as he beat ninth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the first round.

Argentina Open glory in February saw him lift his first ATP title and he became the youngest Brazilian player to win one in the Open Era.

He is also a hit on social media as he became the youngest tennis player to ever hit one million followers on the site at the age of 18 years and seven months.

Fonseca achieved the feat quicker than British tennis star Emma Raducanu, who cracked the seven-figure mark aged 18 years and ten months.

As for Mensik, he became the ninth-youngest winner of a Masters 1000 title when he beat Djokovic in the final of this year’s Miami Open.

On his way to victory in Miami, the 19-year-old toppled American star Taylor Fritz as well as British no.1 Jack Draper.

All eyes will certainly be on the teenage duo as well as Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic when the world’s best convene at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
