Wrexham are keen on acquiring former Southampton duo Danny Ings and Stuart Armstrong.

The Welsh club are preparing for life in the second tier for the first time since the 1981/82 season and are hoping to make a huge impact.

The Red Dragons secured an unprecedented three-straight promotions and are ready to fight it out with the Championship’s big boys for a spot in the top tier.

And Premier League experience could prove to be key for Wrexham’s promotion hopes with Ings, per Sky Sports, and Armstrong, per The Sun, on the club’s radar.

Wrexham are likely to pounce for the pair when their respective contracts expire next week meaning they will be free agents.

Ings will end his two-year association with West Ham while 33-year-old Armstrong is set to leave cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday.

The pair were teammates during their time at Southampton and could be reunited this summer at the SToK Racecourse.

Should Wrexham pull off the double swoop then it would immediately see the duo return to St Mary’s on the opening weekend of the season – live on talkSPORT.

Ings, a three-time England international, will feel he can play a decisive role in the second tier.

The 32-year-old struggled for game time last season having featured just 15 times in the league, scoring once.

Ings has been somewhat of a super sub during his spell at the London Stadium with 41 of his 52 Premier League appearances coming from the bench.

West Ham confirmed at the end of last season that Ings would not be continuing his career at the club next term.

The striker has also been linked with Championship club Watford but a move to ambitious Wrexham might be viewed as a more exciting prospect.

Meanwhile, Armstrong ensured a topsy-turvy campaign last time out, having begun the season with MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps before a move to Hillsborough materialised in January.

The Scotland international was informed that he would not be retained by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season with his contract set to expire on June 30.

Wrexham are likely to garner much attention as they begin life in the Championship.

Following their trip to Southampton, they face home clashes against West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.

They then travel to the capital to face Millwall before the international break takes centre stage.

September will see Wrexham host QPR and Derby with trips for Norwich and Leicester City and October begins with a meeting against last season’s promotion rivals Birmingham.

Boss Phil Parkinson admits that the Championship will throw up a few different obstacles including the momentum his side might lose from the regular international breaks.

“The international breaks are interesting and it is about getting the balance in that right, between keeping the players going and obviously having some time away from the training ground,” he told LeaderLive.

“The games come thick and fast during the season with a lot of midweek games and that is why you have got to utilise the international breaks, and think carefully how we plan them out, but we will definitely do that.”
