The American is in action at the Mallorca Championships this week ahead of Wimbledon.

His run in Spain has now reached the quarter-finals after a victory over world no.10 Ben Shelton.

Tien saw off his compatriot, who was the tournament’s top seed, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the last 16 on Wednesday.

In doing so, he became the youngest American to beat a top ten player on grass at just 19 years and 205 days.

It continues a remarkable journey for the teenager, who was home schooled by his mother before starting high school early aged 11.

In fact, she even named him Learner in tribute to her own career as a teacher.

His latest victory sets up a clash with Corentin Moutet on Thursday for a spot in the semi-finals.

Having reached his first quarter-final since February, another win would earn a maiden last four berth at an ATP Tour event.

Speaking after beating Shelton, Tien explained: “I thought I returned really well today. I felt it was tough to serve today with the wind.

“I felt my toss moved around a lot but I thought I returned really, really well and gave myself a lot of looks on return games.”

His latest victory improves his record against members of the world’s top ten this year to 3-2.

Tien had already become the youngest player to win his first two meetings against players ranked in the top five.

Meanwhile, his run to the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year made him the youngest to do so since Rafael Nadal in 2005.

The world no.67, who does not turn 20 until December, will now be hoping to take his form into his Wimbledon debut next week.

This year’s main draw gets underway at SW19 on Monday and runs through until July 13.

As well as his prowess in the singles, Tien is also a regular in doubles action on the ATP Tour.

This has also been the case in Mallorca alongside partner Alex Michelsen.

Despite winning their opening match, their tournament came to an end on Wednesday.

The pair were beaten in straight sets by Theo Arribage and Guido Andreozzi in the quarter-finals.
