The Weld RE-4 School District will host two virtual town halls in July to discuss cellphone usage in schools.
The town halls come after Colorado lawmakers passed House Bill 25-1135, titled “Communication Devices in Schools,” in May. The bill requires schools to implement a policy about the use of student communication devices during the school day, according to a Weld RE-4 news release.
“Reports show that two-thirds of U.S. teenagers use social media every day, with one-third using it ‘almost constantly,” according to the legislation.
The Weld RE-4 release also cited a study found in the legislation that states American adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media have “double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes, including symptoms of anxiety and depression.”
“These troubling statistics are the tip of the iceberg for the negative effects of smartphone and social media use on our children,” Superintendent Michelle Scallon said in the release.
During the final months of the school year, Weld RE-4 leaders dove into this issue by examining data, reviewing cellphone protocols in other districts and gathering input from parents, students and staff, according to Scallon.
At the town halls, the team will share what they learned and seek additional community feedback on draft recommendations for cellphone use next school year, she added.
The first town hall will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8. To register, go to bit.ly/3ZNSfSE.
Attendees can tune into the second event from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10. To register, go to bit.ly/4ejIqBP.
