A week after the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education approved the permanent appointment of Fabi Bagula as superintendent, the district announced Tuesday that several members of her team have also lost their “interim” titles.

“With the level of experience, education and background each person brings to their respective leadership roles, I’m confident these team members are committed to the direction our district is headed as we build upon the foundation we’ve already established,” said Bagula, who before last week had been serving as interim superintendent.

“They’ve already shown they are incredibly capable of flourishing in their roles.”

Among those promoted are:

Nicole DeWitt, who becomes deputy superintendent starting Wednesday. DeWitt began her career in public education in 2002, working 15 years for the Grossmont Union High School District before joining SDUSD in 2017 as principal of Scripps Ranch High School. Marissa Robledo Allan, who has been appointed senior executive director of the Thriving School Communities. Robledo Allan has more than 25 years experience in public education and last year received the Leadership in Biliteracy Award by the San Diego County Office of Education. Veronika Lopez-Mendez, who has been named executive director of the Multilingual Education Department effective July 1. Lopez-Mendez oversees 25 dual-language programs. Brian Spry, who has been named executive director of due process hearings and mediation. Spry has led that department since his promotion from program specialist to director in August 2021.

Before last week’s board meeting, Bagula had served as interim superintendent since August 2024, following the firing of Lamont Jackson in connection with an investigation that found “credible” accounts of inappropriate conduct toward two former district employees.

A native San Diegan, Bagula has also worked as a teacher, principal, area superintendent and district deputy superintendent.

Bagula noted that based on national standards, SDUSD has been the highest-achieving large urban school district in two years in a row, and is also making gains in state categories.
