MCDONALD’S fans have boycotted the chain over a controversial policy as Walmart and Target are also hit.

The fast food brand has become the latest corporation targeted in a string of other protests amid an “economic blackout”.

The People’s Union USA, led by John Schwarz, is spearheading the movement, which is set to affect McDonald’s until next Monday.

Schwarz announced on Instagram he is leading the boycott to call for “fair taxes”, “real equality” and “people powered change”.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement to CNN that it welcomes “honest dialogue with the communities we serve, but we’re disappointed to see these misleading claims that distort our values and misrepresent our actions.”

“The McDonald’s System also generates billions in federal, state and local taxes annually, and we’ll continue to pay our fair share,” they added.

The boycott comes as McDonald’s was hit by a second consecutive quarter showing a plummet in sales figures.

Customers have been in uproar over increasing prices, around 40 per cent since 2019, despite being known globally as an affordable food option.

Schwarz’ website has dubbed his followers and their cause “a grassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform.”

He added their goal is “to unite Americans against the corruption and greed that has kept us struggling for decades.”

But, this comes after McDonald’s, in communion with many other industry giants, stopped requiring suppliers to meet previous DEI targets.

The company also ceased external surveys that measured corporate diversity.

But experts say the “economic blackout” is still unlikely to affect the huge chain.

This comes after shoppers were outraged at another major discount retailer, and also took action through an “electronic boycott”.

Earlier this month, consumers were gathering together to protest against Dollar General’s diversity, equity and inclusion targets.

This included flooding the retailer’s email account and phone lines as well as a social media campaign in a bid to get it to improve its DEI efforts.

The boycott was kick started by a leader in the Black faith community.

The man, named Jamal-Harrison Bryant is a senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia,

He spearheaded a similar campaign against Target.

The US Sun has covered multiple incidents at Target, some going back months and some only a few days old.

In March, The US Sun reported on the 40-day boycott following a controversial move by the retailer.

It came after Target walked back on its DEI initiatives or diversity, equity and inclusion.

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has cracked down on DEI, claiming that it got rid of induvial opportunity for Americans.

A statement said: “Billions of dollars are spent annually on DEI, but rather than reducing bias and promoting inclusion, DEI creates and then amplifies prejudicial hostility and exacerbates interpersonal conflict.”

Initially, Target reaffirmed its commitment to DEI, only to walk back on that along with other companies like Amazon, Google and Walmart.

Those protesting are set to clog up phone lines and email inboxes with their call for change.

It has been described as “a mass technological campaign of telephone and e-mail and social media.”

The senior pastor spearheading the campaign called it a “Target Fast” during Lent.

But the boycott is yet to end, and the next phase has been branded a “Target blackout”.

He told USA Today: “Target is canceled since they have betrayed and walked away from our community, and we’ve gone on from there.

“We’re done with Target, and then our next focus will be around Dollar General.”

Bryant added: “Like other corporations, Dollar General has bowed to pressure from the Trump administration and rolled back their diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“Dollar General also needs to be held accountable for failing to invest in the very Black and low-income communities that make up the backbone of their customer base.

“This isn’t just a corporate retreat − it’s a betrayal of the people they profit from.”

Despite the online action, the senior pastor has not advocated a total boycott, due to many members of his community living in “food deserts” relying on the chain.

This comes after McDonald’s officially dropped a beloved sweet treat from its menu as a key partnership came to an end.

Much to the dismay of fans, the fast food giant will no longer offer Krispy Kreme doughnuts at its thousands of US locations as the two food giants end their three-year partnership.

The collaboration between the two companies saw Krispy Kreme doughnuts sold at 2,400 McDonald’s restaurants across the US.

But, customers have lots to be excited about as the top fast food chains have announced their summer menus.

With plenty of new food, drink and dessert options, some restaurants are even offering exclusive deals.

Rivalling Popeyes is McDonald’s’ own line of snack wraps featuring their McCrispy Strips.

The chicken, which is coated in breading with a black-pepper flavour, will be available in wrap form from July, complete with shredded lettuce and cheese.
