This is the second time Suryakumar has faced a similar injury in his playing career, after he underwent surgery last year in Munich. The surgery is supposed to undergo in London on the afternoon of 25th June.
"Surya is suffering from a sports hernia on the right side of the lower abdomen. He consulted the doctor in London today and will undergo a sports hernia surgery tomorrow afternoon (June 25)," a source revealed on Suryakumar Yadav's surgery developments. "Post the surgery, it will take 10-12 days till the stitches come off. He will not be able to walk much and will have to basically take complete rest. A sports hernia is not a hernia in the true sense, as it does not include any kind of abdominal protrusion. This is a major soft-tissue injury in the groin area, which includes strain and tears in muscles and ligaments.
Surgery is not a very complex process in this case; however, physical therapy is largely used to strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility.
Suryakumar Yadav's low-profile start to his IPL career
Ever since his return to the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders, he has been a regular player in the KKR playing 11. Having made 54 appearances from 2014 to 2017, Surya could not score to the best of his ability but went on to earn the reputation of a dependable batter who could finish the innings for the Knight Riders.
He produced several such dominating seasons with the Mumbai Indians, scoring a pile of runs in IPL 2018, 2019, and 2020, of which the MI side won two successive titles in 2019 and 2020.
After a major dip in form in 2021, he bounced back with dominating performances in 2022 and onwards, which earned him call-ups from the national side. Since then, Surya has been an unstoppable force in international T20s for India.
The India T20I captain averaged 65.18, the highest for any batter having scored more than 300 runs. SKY had an exceptional strike rate of 167.92 and never failed to score at least 25 runs in all of the 16 innings played.
Suryakumar's upcoming big assignments in 2025
Suryakumar Yadav will next go on to lead India in the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the T20I format. The marquee tournament will be followed by a tour to the Aussie islands for a 5-match T20I series. A year full of T20 action will conclude with South Africa visiting India for a T20 series.
With a very busy season awaiting the current Indian skipper, Suryakumar would look to recover and be back on the field before T20 action resumes for the Men in Blue.
