Times of San Diego is proud to welcome five summer interns from universities in Arizona and California.
The five are James Miller from Occidental College in Los Angeles; Madeline Nguyen and Gabrielle Wallace from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University; and Swasti Singhai and Alexa Vazquez from the University of California Berkeley.
Miller is a rising senior from Palo Alto who served as editor-in-chief of The Occidental, the college’s student newspaper. He will focus on coverage of housing and homelessness in between general assignments.“I’m excited to get into the field and learn more about the complexities of homelessness in San Diego, and find out how the taquerias here compare with my favorite spots in LA,” Miller said.
Nguyen is a December graduate of ASU who is now pursuing a master’s in investigative journalism at the university’s Cronkite School. The Phoenix native has previously interned at The Arizona Republic, Fast Company and PHOENIX magazine, in addition to serving as a health disparities reporter at the Cronkite News bureau in Washington. She will focus on cost of living issues in addition to daily news.
”There’s no better way to get to know a new city and call it home than local reporting,” Nguyen said. “I’m looking forward to covering — and uncovering — the stories that matter for all San Diegans.”
Wallace graduated from ASU in May and will return in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in mass communication. She previously interned at the Cronkite News bureau in Washington and AZ Big Media. The Austin, TX-native will focus on public health and health care in addition to breaking news.
“I’m looking forward to covering a new beat in a new city and diversifying my reporting skills,” Wallace said.
Singhai is a rising junior at Berkeley who is studying chemistry and legal studies while reporting and editing for The Daily Californian. The San Diego native has interned at the District Attorney’s office in San Francisco.
“Now more than ever, local news is crucial,” Singhai said. “I look forward to learning about the diverse set of communities this city is home to.”
Vazquez is a rising senior at Berkeley focusing on entertainment and culture when not following the latest local news. The Chula Vista native has written extensively for The Daily Californian and interned at both SAY San Diego and the Blum Center for Developing Economies.
“I’m excited to write and report on the city I grew up in,” Vazquez said. “As a journalist, I’m getting to know the people and the places from a whole new perspective.”
Funding for their internships comes through Times of San Diego’s parent organization, NEWSWELL, a nonprofit based at ASU that provides back-end operations and business strategies to support news sites.
NEWSWELL properties partner with the Cronkite School to provide learning opportunities for students as well as professional development and a talent pipeline for local newsrooms.
