England’s Jofra Archer faces a fine for breaking a little-known rule in his comeback red-ball match against Durham.
After over four years, the lethal fast bowler finally returned to the longest form of the game for Sussex.
Archer has been playing white-ball cricket largely untroubled for a whileInjuries have ruined Archer’s recent career, and it has been a long road back.
But on Monday, June 23, Archer finally bowled in a red-ball game and claimed figures of 32/1 from 18 overs, including eight maidens.
However, he has immediately broken an English Cricket Board [ECB] rule and faces a fine.
The 30-year-old has been caught wearing the wrong colour socks, which could see a financial penalty or a warning.
ECB regulations state that all players must wear white or light grey socks when competing in the County Championship.
The punishment for failing to do so is usually a cut of the player’s match fee.
But given Archer hasn’t played red-ball cricket for so long, it’s no wonder he forgot about it.
The return of Archer to red-ball cricket is huge for him and for England.
There are very few bowlers in the world who have the same pace and skill set as Archer, and if he’s fit, Ben Stokes and co have a dangerous weapon.
Brendon McCullum‘s side are currently taking on India in a five-match Test series, and the idea is that Archer can be involved at some point.
Archer’s black socks are going to get him in troubleGettyEngland have won the opening Test, impressively chasing down 371 to win by five wickets, but it’s not really down to the bowlers, having shipped a combined total of over 800 runs across the two India innings.
The visitors have actually scored five individual centuries, so it’s clear the bowling has been an issue.
Archer’s return would transform the England attack.
As long as he gets through the second innings unscathed, he should be in contention to come into the England side.
Certainly, that is the plan.
National selector Luke Wright confirmed that England were more than ready to bring Archer back into the Test fold.
When Archer was at his best, he could trouble any batter in Test cricketGETTYSpeaking after the announcement of the squad for the first Test, he said: “The plan is for him to play a few second-team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test.
“Then if all things go well, fingers crossed, he should be available for the second Test.”
It now remains to be seen if Archer comes through the remainder of the game against Durham unscathed and comes back into the Test team.
But before all that, he might have a fine to pay.
