A Greeley West High School teacher and girls wrestling coach told police he sent an explicit photo to an underage student in hopes of dating her once she turned 18.
Michael Serna, identified in an arrest affidavit as a teacher and wrestling coach at the school, was booked into the Weld County Jail on May 23 on one felony count of wholesale promotion of obscenity to a minor, according to Colorado court records.
On Aug. 21, Greeley-Evans School District 6’s Title IX investigator received a tip that Serna had put an underage student in uncomfortable sexual situations, according to the affidavit.
The following day, the investigator learned from the student that Serna, 23, had sent an explicit photo to her on Snapchat, according to the affidavit. In an interview that afternoon, Serna admitted to sending the photo, adding that he wanted to pursue a romantic relationship with the student once she turned 18, the affidavit states.
Once Greeley police took over the investigation, the lead detective spoke with the student, who told him that she began talking with Serna at “Back to School Night” on Aug. 15, police say. Shortly after, Serna followed her on Instagram and liked several of her posts — including one of her in a bikini, according to the affidavit.
Serna then added the student on Snapchat before sending the explicit photo, the affidavit states. The student said she initially “engaged in flirtatious behavior” because she thought the interaction was “kind of funny,” but got uncomfortable when she found out he wanted a romantic relationship, per the affidavit.
One of the student’s friends told a detective that he saw a message from Serna telling the student that she should join the girls wrestling team because he “wanted to feel her soft skin,” the affidavit states. The friend also told the detective that Serna would sit “uncomfortably close” to the student in classes he was teaching.
Serna was released on a $20,000 surety bond. He has a disposition hearing on July 22 in Weld County District Court.
School district officials could not be reached for comment early Monday, but Serna is not listed on the staff page of the high school’s website.
