After dominating on Day 1, India handed England the advantage on Day 2 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Leeds. Jasprit Bumrah once again was India’s best bowler as the visitors were let down by their fielding. Rishabh Pant scripted records, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope ‘bazballed’ as England wrestled themselves back into the contest. The hosts trail by 262 runs, with Joe Root and Ollie Pope going strong.
Rishabh Pant smashes another SENA Ton, Shubman Gill misses out on 150
Rishabh Pant resumed on 65, having taken a measured approach on Day 1. The wicketkeeper kept the runs flowing early on Day 2, picking up boundaries regularly. He went particulary hard against Shoaib Bashir, smashing him for a six to move into the 90s, before another one to get to his century. It was his 3rd in England, the most by a visiting wicket-keeper. Overall it was his 7th, going past MS Dhoni’s record of 6.

— Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 21, 2025Gill resume on 127, adding another 20 runs before holding out to deep mid-wicket. The Indian captain tried to accelerate and get to his maiden 150+ score in style only to miscue it. It was his highest score in Test cricket, and also the second highest by an Indian on their captaincy debut.
Karun Nair’s return falls flat
Much like Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair’s return to the Indian team after 8 years did not turn out well. Walking out to bat with thee score 430/4, Nair had the perfect chance to build his innings. However, he was dismissed for a four-ball duck. The 33-year-old half-heartedly drove a full delivery with Ollie Pope taking a stunning catch.
Ollie Pope… that is OUTSTANDING! A flying catch to his left means Karun Nair departs for a duck. 4⃣4⃣7⃣-5⃣ pic.twitter.com/Vlaugc7Bm3
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 21, 2025India collapse to 471 all out
Shubman Gill was batting on 147, Rishabh Pant had scored a century. India looked good for a 600+ total. Instead what transpired was a disappointing collapse. In good batting conditions, India slipped from 430/3 to 471 all out either side of the Lunch break. The visitors lost their last 7 wickets for just 41 runs, handing England a way back into the contest.
Another day, Another Jasprit Bumrah show
Much like he did in Australia, Jasprit Bumrah single handedly carried the Indian bowling attack. He struck in his first over dismissing Zak Crawley. He then returned to get Ben Duckett and then Joe Root. He now has 148 wickets in SENA countries, the most by an Asian pacer. Bumrah averages less than 21 overseas, going past Wasim Akram in becoming one of the greats of the format.

— Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 21, 2025He could have had a fourth wicket, when he surprised Harry Brook with a bumper. However, the Indian pacer had overstepped, earning the England superstar a reprieve. The lack of support for him was telling, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna struggling to make any breakthroughs.
Player of the day: Ollie Pope
Pressure makes diamonds And we have the biggest jewel in Ollie Pope pic.twitter.com/9lMrJnFGQn
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 21, 2025Ollie Pope’s selection was aa doubt ahead of the IND vs ENG 1st Test. Pope had struggled for form with Jacob Bethell making a claim with a fine show against New Zealand. However, Stokes stuck with Pope following his 170 against Zimbabwe. The vice-captain repaid that faith with a scintillating century, wearing the Indian attack down.
He stitched vital partnerships with both Ben Duckett and Joe Root to guide England past 200. Pope was adept at handling Bumrah and will be key to England’s hunt of India’s 471.
