Antonio Conte has recalled his fears of being sacked by Chelsea after John Terry appealed for a different approach to training.
Conte was appointed as head coach at the Blues in 2016 and arrived with a no holds barred attitude to his sessions in between matches.
Conte delivered his tough training sessions to Chelsea in 2016GettyThe Italian is known for his physical and demanding training methods that have even left some of his past players vomiting.
Whilst there may be a sense that Conte pushes his squad too hard, he has revealed why he sticks to his intense training techniques.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Conte spoke on how he once made alterations at the request of Chelsea captain Terry.
“One time, the Chelsea captain came to me to ask to slow down the pace [of training], to do fewer video sessions,” he said.
“I agreed, mainly out of respect to their culture, their different way of approaching football.
“When you’re in a different country, you have to be careful to not cause too much upset.”
Conte then added: “Well, we lost two games in a row and I risked being sacked.
“Since then, I always think that if I have to ‘die’ as a result of the choices that have been made, I have to do it my way.
“And not in the hands of others. This is the way. ‘Trust the process’ as they say in England. And when I think back to how tough training was, I smile.
“[Zinedine] Zidane and [Alessandro] Del Piero trained much harder. Today, we do about a third of what we used to do.
Terry wanted his new head coach to tone things down a bitGetty But Conte returned to his normal sessions after two defeatsGetty“The work has to be linked to the results on the pitch. I’ve coached teams where after a little while, the players themselves began to identify dangerous situations.
“For me, that means that we’ve achieved the right result.”
After the two consecutive defeats at the beginning of his Chelsea tenure, it appears that Conte was right to revert to his old ways.
The Blues switched to a 3-4-3 formation and went on a 13-match winning run to cruise to the top of the Premier League.
Chelsea subsequently lifted the 2016/17 title, with a 2-0 victory at West Brom getting them over the line with two games to spare.
Conte then delivered an FA Cup triumph in the following season, but was sacked just weeks later.
Conte helped Chelsea win their fifth and most recent Premier League titleGetty But he was sacked a year later after they won the FA CupGettySerie A success at Inter Milan arrived in 2021 before he returned to England with an appointment at Chelsea’s rivals Tottenham.
However, he made a noisy exit from north London after a damning press conference rant in which he called the Spurs players ‘selfish’.
Conte is now at Napoli and guided them to a fourth Serie A title in the club’s 98-year history.
In doing so, he became the first manager to win the Italian top-flight with three different clubs – Juventus, Inter and Napoli.
