Everton may be preparing for an exciting first season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium – but they’ve been told they mustn’t splash the cash.
That’s the view of former boss Sean Dyche, who was in charge of the Toffees when they were docked points on two occasions in the 2023/24 campaign.
The Merseyside outfit were first hit with a ten-point penalty, which was reduced to six, for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules relating to the 2021/22 term.
And just two months later, they were handed another two-point deduction for breaching PSR the following year.
Everton, who will be playing in their new 52,888-seater stadium in the 2025/26 season, then announced losses of £53m for the 2023/24 campaign.
It was the seventh year in a row that they have posted losses, with the figure totalling £570m.
After a promising end to the season that saw Everton finish 13th in the table following David Moyes‘ return in January, fans are hoping for a strong summer window in their quest to seal a first top-ten finish since 2021.
However Dyche has urged the Everton board to be sensible in the market when discussing possible transfers to talkSPORT.
talkSPORT understands that Moyes’ side are keen on a deal to sign Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker following Ashley Young’s departure.
Speaking of the potential deal, Dyche said: “I mean, they’re probably at that stage where they still need that kind of professional depth of some players.
“We had it with Youngie, obviously Seamus [Coleman]. Kyle Walker, I don’t know him personally.
“But the way he conducts himself, his history and his depth of knowledge of the game is quite obvious.
Everton suffered from two points separate points deductions during Dyche’s time at Goodison ParkGetty Moyes may be keen on investment this summer, but Dyche believes caution is needed from the boardGetty“So, yeah, there’s a few players and again, I think there will be investment there.
“But I don’t think it’s wild investment, I don’t think they’ve got hundreds of millions.
“Because they can’t go back down the road that we’re going down.
“Obviously, you can’t go back down [with] them points deductions and all that sort of stuff.
“So it still has to be monitored going forward I think, their spending.
“I don’t know the truth of the amounts, but it will have to be balanced out still against financial fair play to make sure the club’s in better health as it goes forward.”
Walker could be set to swap the Eithad for Everton this summerGettyOne big talking point at Everton remains the future of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with his contract to expire at the end of the month.
Signed from Sheffield United in 2016, the 28-year-old has been struck by numerous injuries, which has seen him miss 111 games in all competitions.
A hamstring knock in the 2024/25 season limited the England international to 26 Premier League games – where he found the back of the net just three times.
Pressed on whether Everton should look to keep Calvert-Lewin at the club, Dyche remarked: “Dom, it’s just keeping him fit and keeping him motivated in the sense of fitness meets performance
“And I think that’s his next step now, is staying fit.
“I mean generally, we did get him fit, we did get him there, but then of course, he’s had another set back at the end of this season.
Calvert-Lewin is set to become a free agent after nine seasons at EvertonGetty“He’s still got plenty to offer, he’s not old he’s still, I think he’s 27 [28], around that mark.”
Commenting on if he has any inside information on Calvert-Lewin staying, Dyche added: “I don’t fidget around with all the people finding out what’s going on in the gossip.
“So I don’t know any of that, but I did read that they were in some form of talks with Dom and you can see why – strikes are hard to find.
“And if you can get him going, I know that’s been a bit of an if, because he’s sort of nearly got going again and then not quite got firing.
“But if you can, then you’ve got to be looking at it as a serious option, but it is keeping him fit or getting him fit, keeping him fit, and that motivation to really go and push hard to be the top striker I know he can be.”
