England Under-21s are just three wins away from retaining their title at the European Championship but Spain stand in their way.

The Young Lions claimed victory in 2023 in the final against La Roja, and they will have to overcome their old foes if they are to make the last four in Slovakia.

However, Lee Carsley‘s men will need to be much better than they have been in recent games.

After winning their first match, England have only managed a draw and a defeat.

They were beaten 2-1 by Germany in their final group game, meaning they finished second and have to face Spain, who are unbeaten.

Having already sealed their place in the last eight, several England players were rested against Germany.

Tino Livramento, Archie Gray, Hayden Hackney and CJ Egan-Riley were all unused substitutes.

Meanwhile, James McAtee came off the bench in the second half.

However, all will be in contention to start here.

Spain were in a similar situation to England for their final match, so Mateo Joseph was among those to be rested.

But he and others should return.

England vs Spain: What has been said?

After losing to Germany, Carsley claimed his side were ‘shell-shocked’.

He said: “I thought there was definitely a bit of shell-shock, going 2-0 down so soon.

“We didn’t start well either in the last game [0-0] against Slovenia. That’s something we need to address.

“The first half was nowhere near good enough. The way we started the game, the goals that we conceded were really disappointing.

“It was important they knew that. The changes we made at half-time, [we] could have made any number of changes. I asked for a reaction in the second half and we definitely saw a reaction.

“The performance was not at the level we need. When you think of the reaction in the second half that was more like it. It took us to go 2-0 down to get to that point which is disappointing.”
