Jon Jones labelled a question on Tom Aspinall ‘wild’ and ‘off the cuff’ before leaving an interview on Thursday.
Jones is the UFC heavyweight champion but hasn’t defended his belt since stopping Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024.
MMA fans have urged ‘Bones’ to put his belt on the line against British interim heavyweight titleholder Aspinall, who is desperate for a unification bout.
A petition was even created, calling for UFC President and CEO Dana White to strip his champion of the belt.
However, Jones has consistently dismissed any talks of that fight happening, and the chances of both men locking horns seem close to zero at this point.
The 37-year-old appeared on the Full Send Podcast this week after attending an event put on by his Dirty Boxing Championship promotion, which he co-owns with Mike Perry.
“What would it take to fight Tom Aspinall from the UFC?” host and spearhead of YouTube group Nelk Kyle Forgeard asked.
“What does the UFC have to do?”
Without hesitation, Jones responded: “You’ve said something really wild and off the cuff.
“I’ll see you guys later.”
Jones left the podcast minutes after admitting he had no interest in fighting anytime soon, handing a potential final blow to a bout with Aspinall.
“I don’t want to say that I am retired,” ‘Bones’ explained.
Jones had enough when he was asked by host Kyle Forgeard about fighting AspinallFULL SEND PODCAST - YouTube He boasts one of the best resumes in the promotion’s history“Fighting is in my blood, but right now, I couldn’t really care less about fighting.
“I have been doing it my whole life at a very high level, and when the itch comes back, and if it comes back, then I’ll do it with my whole heart…
“But right now, I look around and I realise what is true, what is real.
“I see the way people look at me and the way I make people feel, and it’s an extraordinary thing.
“It is a true blessing. Now, my job is to serve that and give that to my fans.
“Be reachable, touchable, let them know what I have inside. That is who I am right now, I have punched and kicked enough people.”
Aspinall has now moved on from a fight with Jones, saying the latter is retiredGettyEarlier this week, UFC boss White gave Jones a two-week deadline to decide if he wants to fight Aspinall.
But judging from the champion’s comments, it seems extremely unlikely White will receive the go-ahead to make the fight happen.
This would put Aspinall up against No. 2-ranked UFC heavyweight Ciryl Gane or two-weight world champion Alex Pereira, who looks set to move up in weight.
This wasn’t the first time Jones had walked out of an interview after being questioned about Aspinall.
He met with talkSPORT’s Adam Catterall for an interview with TNT Sports last November ahead of UFC 309.
Catterall can also be found alongside PFL’s Brendan Loughnane on the pair’s Uncaged show for talkSPORT MMA, as well as discussing all things MMA and boxing on Fight Night.
“How’s it going,” Jones said as he approached Catterall to have a chat.
“I’m good, how are you?” Catterall responded, prompting Jones to take a seat to get proceedings underway.
However, just as Catterall sat down, ‘Bones’ has second thoughts.
“Hey I’m not going to do this interview,” he said, and headed for the exit.
“Because It’s going to be an Aspinall fest. I’m not going to,” he concluded.
