RUSH, N.Y. – A major storm has caused significant damage at Pinnacle and Lyons Road in Rush, washing away part of the road and leaving it impassable. The water has eroded the road from the bottom up, leaving asphalt hanging over the water and pieces falling into the creek.
Steve Adams, a Rush neighbor, said, “27 years in the neighborhood and, you know, nothing like it. You know, a couple times, you know, this area that floods and it gets ponded sometimes, but, it never has overflowed like this before. So this is totally unprecedented.”
Joanne Braeunle, another Rush resident, described her experience, saying, “I was driving from Syracuse to Rochester when the storm hit, and it was as bad as any blizzard I’ve driven in with. I don’t think I went over 35 for like two hours, but I was able to get home, and then I got here because I knew this would flood, because it does in the spring a lot. And it was, whoa, this is a whole lot different than normal.”
Braeunle, who has lived in the area for 35 years, said, “Not like this,” when asked if she had ever seen a storm like this.
Adams added, “We made it home and then we texted with some neighbors, and they alerted us to the fact that there was a lot of water coming down here, but we had no idea. So we walked down last night and it was completely crusted over, was flowing on that side, just like, like a waterfall on that side. It was incredible you could not see any of the road here.”
Construction crews have been unable to provide a timeline for repairs, as the water needs to recede before they can assess the damage.
The road collapse is not trapping anyone in the neighborhood, and residents are not worried about getting in or out.
Just down Pinnacle road, Francis Ward was spotted cleaning his yard. The creek near the longtime Rush resident’s property overflowed, forcing the water into his yard.
Ward, who has lived in the area for 57 years, said he had never witnessed a storm of this magnitude. “We have had several floods here in the past. One or two very big ones, but nothing to compare,” Ward said.
“This time it took out bridges, a dam I had put in washed out, which I had for flood control. Really I have no control over the water now.”
“I’ve never heard of rain hit this hard and just make that sound, but I didn’t think it would be sustained,” Ward said. “Usually we’ve had some like that, which are very brief, and it’s done well. Not this time. Yeah, this is the granddaddy of them all.”
Ward is working to repair the damage on his own, including rebuilding bridges on his property. Despite the challenges, he remains in good spirits as he tackles the repairs himself.
