DENVER (KDVR) — A suspect is in the hospital after a traffic stop led to a foot chase through the University of Northern Colorado campus in Greeley that ended with police firing shots on Wednesday night.
The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team said a Greeley police officer tried to make a traffic stop at 8:12 p.m. on Wednesday in the area of 18th Street, just blocks away from the University of Northern Colorado campus.
FOX31 Newsletters: Sign up to get breaking news sent to your inboxThe team said the officers knew the male driver had an active felony warrant, and he allegedly didn't stop when police tried to pull him over. The team said the suspect then got out of the car and brandished a gun.
Officers then chased the suspect on foot through the UNC campus. The team said the suspect allegedly discarded his gun, which is when the officers returned fire. The man was taken to a local hospital, and at this time, his condition is unknown.
At this time, the team didn't specify if the suspect was injured by the gunshots and if this shooting took place on UNC campus.
No officers or members of the public were injured, and the team said there is no current threat to the public. During the time of the chase, the university was already on summer break, although there are summer classes on campus.
The suspect's identification or more information on his active felony warrants hasn't been released. The team said more details will be released when they are available. FOX31 has reached out to the Weld County Sheriff's Office and is awaiting a response.
The critical incident response team is investigating the incident.
