Desert music ‘queen’ Jesika von Rabbit releases new solo record ...Middle East

Desert music star Jesika von Rabbit is inviting listeners down a musical rabbit hole and to another dimension with a new album that she said is the most personal work she’s done in her long and colorful career.

“It’s just a look at myself and a look at the world around me. It’s about love and loss and also there’s just some weird and fun tracks that just take you to another dimension,” said Von Rabbit, who released her third solo album “Bunnywood Babylon” on June 13.

The musician, who is known as “The Queen of the High Desert,” made her name fronting the Joshua Tree-based indie band Gram Rabbit. She is touring in support of the new record with stops planned at the Redwood Bar June 20 to perform her genre-mixing mix of electronic and Americana music.

“People can expect to go on like an Alice in Wonderland adventure but with Jesika in Bunnywood Babylon,” she said of her concert at the Redwood.

Recorded at The Rabbit Ranch in Joshua Tree, whichshe calls home, and mixed at the Royal Triton Studios in Silver Lake, the 11-track album was inspired by the desert landscape as well as her late cat and delivers a groovy, often lighthearted mix of music that she said will offer fans a personal look at her life.

“This album says that I’m complicated, that I can put myself down a lot but that I can also feel very empowered,” she said.

This is also one of her more rustic-sounding records.

“I’ve kind of coined my own genre title here and I call this new album electrona-Americana. I really span the genres on this, which I have done a lot but this album has a lot more Americana sounds on it than I’ve had on my past albums,” she added.

The latest single, which opens the record, is titled “Pretty Dum.” It’s a self lighthearted look at herself.

“It is a little self depreciating but it also lets me off the hook and says it’s OK, maybe I’m just misunderstood,” Von Rabbit said. “It’s about getting older and looking in the mirror and examining myself, but then it’s also like who cares? Life is good and you’re doing fine,” she said.

While the album was just released her fans got a tease of the new music when she released the first single in 2024. The hooky electro-rock track dubbed “I’ve Gotta Keep My Buzz Going,” is about  her dear cat Buzz who passed away at the age of 9 when he was hit by a car.

Other standout tunes in the new album include “What is your Ism?” a political song about how people identify themselves and others.

“It’s this very majestic synth-heavy song where I go through listing people’s isms, because there are so many isms these days,” she said.

Von Rabbit throws fans a bit of a curveball with the song “Surf Music.”

“It doesn’t sound like surf music at all. It’s this really cool trance-y electronic song that goes through all these different little moments,” she said. “It’s the opposite of surf music,” she added.

The album closes with another introspective tune called “Desert Rain.”

“That’s a great coupling with the opening track ‘Pretty Dum,’ because it’s me examining my life, where I’ve been, how I feel now and where I might be going. It’s really soft and vulnerable and I think it’s a great way to close off the album,” she said
