We look ahead to this Group A match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our Inter Miami vs Porto prediction and preview. After 0-0 draws in their opening matches, can either side pick up a valuable win?
Inter Miami vs Porto Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer is leaning towards a Porto win in this match against Inter Miami, with the Portuguese club winning 49.9% of the pre-match simulations. Porto kept a clean sheet despite allowing an expected goals total of 2.1 against Palmeiras on Sunday, the highest xG allowed in a FIFA Club World Cup match without conceding a goal on record. Inter Miami have lost five of their last seven matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (W1 D1).Both Inter Miami and Porto began their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournaments with goalless draws, so will be looking to secure their first win in this match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta on Thursday.
Inter Miami were perhaps the more fortunate of the two sides to win a point on Matchday 1, with much of that being down to the heroics of goalkeeper Óscar Ustari. He made eight saves in Inter Miami’s opening Club World Cup match, his joint-most in a game since joining the club last year. Ustari recorded a goals prevented value of 3.0 in the match, based on Opta’s expected goals on target model.
Porto also showed weaknesses in defence on MD 1 against Palmeiras. They allowed the Brazilian side 39 touches in their box overall, which was the most against them in a game in all competitions since October 2024 (42 vs Manchester United in the Europa League).
The Portuguese club kept a clean sheet despite allowing an expected goals total of 2.1 on Sunday, the highest xG allowed in a FIFA Club World Cup match (including the previous format) without conceding a goal since at least 2017, when such records began.
Inter Miami will hope that captain Lionel Messi can provide more than he did across his 90 minutes versus Al Ahly. The legendary Argentine has been in great form in MLS this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting five more in 15 appearances, but was unable to score with any of his five shots versus the Egyptian opponents.
Samu Aghehowa is a player who Miami will have to watch closely on Thursday. Viktor Gyökeres (39 for Sporting) was the only player to score more Primeira Liga goals in 2024-25 than him (19), averaging a goal every 119 minutes. He’ll be supported by wonderkid Rodrigo Mora, who has impressed with 10 goals and four assists in just 1,378 league minutes in 2024-25, despite only just turning 18 years old last month.
Inter Miami vs Porto Prediction
Porto won nearly half of the 10,000 Opta supercomputer simulations for this match before kick-off (49.9%), while Inter Miami secured three points 25.6% of the time. After both sides drew their opening matches of the tournament, another draw would be disappointing – the chances of that occurring are rated at 24.5%.
Following MD 1, Porto (60.3%) are favourites to progress through Group A and into the last 16, with Palmeiras (52.9%). Al Ahly are the outsiders (42.6%), just behind Inter Miami (44.1%).
