India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir is likely to rejoin the side in time for the 1st Test against England at Headingley. The former Indian cricketer was forced to fly back home due to a family emergency. The five-match Test series is scheduled to begin from June 20 onwards, with Headingley, Leeds set to host the 1st game.
Gambhir to rejoin side soon
As per Cricbuzz, Gambhir is expected to reunite with the Indian team just in time for the 1st Test. On Saturday, reports suggested that he had to fly back home immediately to attend to his mother as she had suffered a heart attack and was in the intensive care unit (ICU). As per latest reports, Gambhir’s mother is recovering well and he is expected to return to national duties soon.
“He will definitely rejoin the team before the first Test. He has consulted the doctors about his mother’s condition, which has improved although she continues to be in the ICU. But he will plan his return soon,” said a source close to Gambhir.
Laxman to leave England in day or two
On Sunday, reports claimed that VVS Laxman will be India’s temporary coach until Gambhir returns. The NCA head has been in the UK with the Indian team. However, a Cricbuzz report claims that Laxman has gone to England for some other purpose and is not on an any official assignment with the Indian team.
“He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne,” said a BCCI source
A source told the publication that while he might have spoken to the coaches and the selectors, he had no official role in the team. Another source claimed that Laxman had gone to Switzerland for a conference and simply stopped by in London as it was a part of his plan.
“The target is to win in England, and he may have spoken to the coaches and selectors present here, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game. But he holds no official role with this team,” a source said.
