DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Police Department deployed officers with riot shields and smoke to disperse a group of ICE protesters on Saturday evening.

The crowd gathered at the Colorado State Capitol before heading towards Colfax Avenue.

Police closed West Colfax Avenue in both directions between Interstate 25 and North Osage Street due to protesters in the area.

FOX31's Nate Belt was at the scene and said that police used officers with riot shields and smoke to guide the group back to the area where they began near the Capitol.

Not long after, Colfax was reopened, and police were removing the smoke canisters from the road.

The group was not affiliated with the "No Kings" protesters who attended the rally at the Capitol earlier in the day on Saturday. The "No King" protest ended around 4 p.m.

DPD said in a statement to FOX31 that this group was the sixth march tracked during the day of protests. The protesters were heading toward Osage Street and I-25, where they were met by officers and told they would not be able to access the highway.

Officers used loudspeakers before protesters attempted to push through the line set by the police. Pepper balls and smoke were used to disperse the crowd.

The department said that there were multiple reports of protesters throwing bottles and rocks at the officers, as well as reports of graffiti.

As of 8:15 p.m., five people have been arrested, and no protesters remain in the area.
