Arizona Diamondbacks closer Justin Martinez is expected to miss an extended period of time due to an UCL sprain suffered Monday, skipper Torey Lovullo told MLB Network radio.
Lovullo adds Martinez is seeking a second opinion on the injury.
“The concern is high. He’s going to be lost for an extended period of time,” Lovullo said. “It could be 13 months, it could be 12 months. It’s something right now that’s going to be very, very substantial. It’s very unfortunate.

“He’s already had UCL reconstruction and based on that type of procedure he had, those 3 to 5 years, he’s a high-intensity guy, so he’s right in the bucket of having it re-done. … It’s a tremendous loss for the Diamondbacks not just because he’s a great pitcher. He’s a great young man. … We’re going to miss him.”
Martinez left Arizona’s 8-4 win over Seattle on Monday after experiencing elbow tightness. He went 0.2 innings and gave up an earned run and a walk. He struck out a pair.
He was placed on the 15-day injured list the following day with the UCL sprain. It marks his second stint on the IL after dealing with right shoulder inflammation in early May.
Across 17 games played (15.1 innings pitched) this season, Martinez sported a 4.11 ERA and 1.239 WHIP. He earned five saves, walked 12 and struck out 22.
Martinez inked a five-year contract extension worth $18 million this past March.
