University of Northern Colorado All-American wrestler Stevo Poulin announced his transfer to Iowa State on Friday, four days after longtime coach Troy Nickerson left to be the head coach at Army West Point.

Poulin, a 125 pounder who has one year of college eligibility remaining, is the first high-profile wrestler to leave the Bears since Nickerson was announced Monday as the new coach at Army. Nickerson accepted the Army job after 11 seasons in Greeley, which ended this year with both Poulin and Vincent Zerban being named All Americans for the first time.

There is a 30-day transfer window open to Division I student athletes when a coach is fired or leaves for another job.

University of Northern Colorado wrestler Stevo Poulin, top, controls Missouri's Gage Walker during their 125-pound bout Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024 at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley. Poulin decisioned Walker 7-1, but the No. 6-ranked Tigers beat No. 20 UNC 24-14 in the season-opening dual match for the Big 12 Conference opponents. UNC also celebrated the 100th season of wrestling at the Greeley school by honoring former wrestlers during halftime of the match. (Dean Popejoy/UNC Athletics).

Listed as a redshirt senior on the UNC roster for 2025-26, Poulin earned his All-American status following an eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. Zerban, also a redshirt senior next year, finished sixth at 157 pounds. The top eight in each weight class are named All Americans.

Poulin announced his intention to transfer on his Instagram page Friday afternoon. The news was later reported by multiple outlets including FloWrestling, a streaming service and wrestling website, as well as by The Des Moines Register and The Ames (Iowa) Tribune.

Poulin’s IG post showed him wearing a cardinal red ISU singlet with the word “committed” in all capital letters. The words “last dance” were written in the caption with an emoji of a tornado. Iowa State’s nickname is the Cyclones.

Poulin was a three-time New York state high school champion at three different weight classes. He went to North Carolina State for one season in 2021-22 before transferring to UNC.

Iowa State is one of the top college programs in the country and a member of the Big 12 Conference. UNC also competes in the Big 12 in wrestling. Iowa State is also the alma mater of UNC interim head coach Earl Hall. A UNC assistant since 2021, Hall was named interim coach with Nickerson’s departure.

Hall was a two-time All-American and four-time NCAA championship qualifier for the Cyclones, including at 125 pounds in 2014.
