Ryan Grubb gives summer update on Alabama QB competition ...Middle East

Little has changed within the competition to be the next Alabama starting quarterback.

In an interview on Tide 100.9 on Thursday, Grubb doubled down on the comments he and head coach Kalen DeBoer made in the spring about the competition. As things currently stand, Ty Simpson is the penciled-in starter. That could still change, but Simpson has the edge following a shift from organized spring training to less structured summer workouts.

“Yes, he is [the leader] right now,” Grubb said. “We don’t really deal in absolutes until we have to.”

Last month, DeBoer said his standard operating procedure has been to name a starting quarterback around a week and a half before the team’s first game. That was the route they took at Washington their first year, when Michael Penix Jr. was widely expected to win the starting job after transferring from Indiana, but DeBoer didn’t make things official until a little more than a week before the opener.

DeBoer also said during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show last month that Simpson would be the guy if they had to play a game immediately, but they hoped to keep the competition going because where the group was in May was “[not] good enough to where we need to be to have the success we want to have as a football team.”

Grubb said Thursday that Simpson improved “for an older quarterback” during this offseason. Simpson, a fourth-year player, is battling third-year sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell for the job. Mack has been in DeBoer’s system since his freshman year — a season he also spent working with Grubb at Washington. Russell is a former 5-star. But so is Simpson.

“We had our post-spring evaluations done with the guys,” Grubb said. “Ty took care of the football better. He operated better. I thought he improved for an older quarterback. I know he’s young to playing and starting experience. But as an older guy, I thought, especially toward the latter part of spring, he started to show more of those characteristics.”

Alabama opens its season on Aug. 30 against Florida State in Tallahassee. When fall camp starts up, the competition will reach its stretch run.

“We’re still going to let them compete,” Grubb said. “We still are right now and will again in fall camp.”
