Mizzou AD discusses rev-share plans following House settlement ...Middle East

Mizzou athletic director Laird Veatch told local reporters on Thursday that not all sponsored sports within the athletic department will receive money when colleges start sharing revenue with student-athletes on July 1.

In a press conference, Veatch issued a disclaimer before diving into the Tigers’ plan to navigate the new landscape in college athletics: He has answers, but he does not have every answer. And there are some things Mizzou won’t share publicly. Veatch said they have a plan to distribute revenue to football and men’s basketball and keep those sports competitive, but sharing specifics about that plan doesn’t provide Mizzou with a competitive advantage.

Other sports will see a portion of the $20.5 million that schools can begin sharing with student-athletes next month, but the majority will go to the revenue drivers.

“The bulk of our revenue share funds will go to football, men’s basketball, similar to the conversation you’re seeing across the country,” Veatch said, per PowerMizzou. “There will be other sports that will receive revenue share. Not all sports will.”

Georgia has publicly shared its plan: $13.5 million to football, $2.7 million to men’s basketball, $900,000 to women’s basketball, $900,000 to other sponsored sports, and $2.5 million for new scholarships. Many expect that will be the model most programs follow, though not everyone will be as forthcoming as Georgia.

“The reason for that, candidly, is because until, until we’re at a point where, you know, the process allows for that kind of transparency across the board of all sports, I just candidly don’t see a competitive value or reason, a strategic incentive for us to disclose those specifics,” Veatch said. “I do think that will likely happen in time across the board, but until that time, I just don’t think it’s in the best interest.”

According to the Columbia Daily Tribune’s Calum McAndrew, Mizzou reported a $15.2 million operating deficit for Fiscal 2024. Mizzou set a record for revenue, but it also set a new high-water mark for spending. The athletic department received $25.7 million from the university for “direct institutional support” during FY24, but the school also footed the bill for the operating deficit with what it called an “internal loan.”

So, in 2025, where does the program come up with another $20 million to share with student-athletes?

“We looked at areas like travel and dining and equipment and specific elements to what we do,” Veatch said, per PowerMizzou. “And stepping back from a staffing standpoint, how do we approach certain areas, where do we need to apply our resources? I would say it was across the board and inclusive. Really, everybody’s touched it, whether that’s the administrative side or our sports, we’re going to have to adjust and really kind of make room for this opportunity to provide more of those resources directly to student-athletes.”
