An inmate once housed in San Diego allegedly stabbed a supervising correctional officer in the head this week at a prison in Lancaster.

The assault occurred around 11:45 a.m. Monday at California State Prison, Los Angeles County, when Cosmin Badiu, 28, allegedly attacked the officer in the prison yard, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

The officer was treated at the prison infirmary before being transported to an outside hospital.

“The officer is in good condition and awaiting discharge,” the CDCR said in a statement.

An improvised weapon was recovered at the scene, and Badiu was placed in restricted housing, officials said. The facility was placed on “modified programming status” to allow for a 24-hour threat assessment.

According to the CDCR, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony prosecution.

“Peer support and other support services are being offered to employees,” according to the CDCR.

Badiu was received from San Diego County on Aug. 8, 2019, and sentenced to nine years in prison for first-degree burglary as a second striker, along with an enhancement for previous felony convictions of serious or critical offenses, according to the CDCR.

California State Prison, Los Angeles County opened in 1993 and houses about 2,700 inmates ranging from minimum to high-security levels.
