Paul Finebaum is not done reacting to the conclusion of the House v. NCAA settlement, which officially passed last week. The move ushers in an area that allows programs to pay student-athletes directly, a landmark move in the history of athletics.
On Tuesday, Finebaum made his regularly scheduled appearance with “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” and was asked about the settlement. Specifically, Finebaum was asked if he had any surprises about the approval overall.
“I think maybe the biggest surprise or disconnect I see is the enthusiasm from college leaders, including commissioner (Greg) Sankey, and the disconnect between the fans who, quite frankly, don’t really understand it and are at the point where they just don’t even care,” said Finebaum. “They just want to see the football opposed to feeling like they’re back in high school again, trying to understand geometry.”

To Finebaum’s point, most fans only care about the games on the field, and the on-field product should be mostly unchanged. Fans will still flock to SEC stadiums in the fall, eager to see their favorite stars and hoping to watch their teams compete for a championship.
As for the overall scope of the agreement, Finebaum admitted he does see the Power 4 conferences as big winners from the settlement. However, he also predicted that attorneys are already looking at the best avenues for potential lawsuits.
“I think that’s why you see such bullishness from the Power 4 commissioners. I think what you see behind the curtain is always what concerns and keeps people that run college athletics up at night. If something is challengeable by attorneys, it will be challenged,” said Finebaum. “I don’t suspect, I know attorneys are sitting around right now, actively moving, trying to figure out where the best lawsuit is, where the best route lies. I don’t mean to cast Spurgeon’s on the entire legal process, though I will. They’re in business to make money, as opposed to what I always thought they were supposed to do, which is defend people, protect people.”
For now, fans can relax and look forward to real football once again this fall, but it’s likely not the last step in the evolution of college sports, rather just the beginning of a new frontier for all.
