ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The mother of a Commerce City 16-year-old tells FOX31 a teen who’s accused of shooting and killing her son will get to go home ahead of a trial.
As Envy Reinhardt’s parents went into court Monday, dozens of people walked outside of the Adams County Courthouse holding signs calling for justice.
Mother of Denver hairstylist missing for months says she will always be proud of her daughter“We're here outside with signs because we want him (a teen accused of killing Reinhardt) to serve his time,” Crystal Rose said. “We want him to get the consequences he deserves.”
A teen in this case is charged with reckless manslaughter and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
“It's been 120 days, only 17 weeks that my son has been taken from us,” Reinhardt’s mother, Joy Herrera, said. “And this boy has been put away only to be released before his consequences have been made.”
Since this is a juvenile case, FOX31 was not allowed in the courtroom on Monday. However, Herrera explained what she witnessed inside.
“We were basically going up against his release from the Empowerment Center that he has been in for the last 60 days out of the detention facility,” Herrera said. “He completed that and is now being released home under supervision, which, to us, we don't agree with him being let out to do that.”
Herrera hopes someone will come forward to the Commerce City police with more information about what happened in the car that February night when she lost her son.
“I guess there’s just more of the lack of evidence to prove a motive for this actually happening versus just accidental misuse of handling a weapon,” she said. “To me, honestly, a kid at the age of 16 with everything out there nowadays from video games to social media, I mean, what kid doesn't know what a gun can do? And when you're repeatedly just playing with these guns, you should suffer the consequences if something were to happen, whether you meant to do it or not.”
1 arrested after stolen vehicle pursuit in Douglas CountyFOX31 reached out to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office about the manslaughter charge. We received the following statement:
“The District Attorney’s Office is bound by ethical rules that limit what we can disclose about pending cases, particularly those in juvenile court. In every case presented to this office by our law enforcement partners, the DA’s Office conducts an evaluation of the facts and evidence and makes a charging decision based upon the evidence and the law.”
17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office“I hope no other family has to go through this,” Herrera said. “But seeing that there has been so many crimes like this repeatedly happening and I don't see change, there needs to be change. I mean, it's a slap on the wrist for these kids. And all these kids are starting to realize and see that.”
