AUSTIN (KXAN) — Oppressive heat is expected to scorch Central Texas on Sunday with heat indices near 108°.
LATEST FORECASTA Few Reminders
If you have to be outdoors, remember to stay hydrated and rest often. Taking frequent breaks in the shade is encouraged.
Dr. Ryan McCorkle, an emergency department physician at St. David's Medical Center told KXAN it's important to keep an eye for signs for heat related illness to avoid serious injury.
"When they stop sweating and you get this dry really flushed skin—that's where you're looking at heat stroke—you've overwhelmed your body's ability to cool yourself off," McCorkle said. "[You can] enter heat stroke and can do some permanent brain damage if we can't get that temperature down."
McCorkle also emphasized to wear lose fitting clothing or clothing that is "wicking" to reduce heat related illnesses.
Just this past week an Austin firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion was transported to the hospital by EMS. Austin Fire Department Division Chief Wayne Parrish says the rising temperatures are a contributing factor.
"When you have elevated temperatures outside, it just adds more to that Heat Exposure that we can suffer from," Parrish said. "To prepare for the heat, what we do is we reinforce everyday—hydrate, drink plenty of water.
