Dopeywood is coming to LA: a one-night celebration of recovery and dark comedy ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

After nearly a decade of wild stories, gut-punching honesty, and offbeat community building, Dopey: On the Dark Comedy of Drug Addiction is stepping into the spotlight for its biggest event yet.

Dopeywood, a one-night-only live experience, will hit Los Angeles on Saturday, June 7, 2025, bringing together comedians, musicians, storytellers, and the ever-growing Dopey Nation for a celebration that’s anything but typical.

Hosted by podcast creator Dave Manheim and presented by ORO Recovery, the event will take place at 5364 Wilshire Ave. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the show kicks off at 7:15 p.m. The lineup includes a mix of comedians, musicians, and familiar faces from the recovery world, such as Rich Roll, Margaret Cho, Jack Osbourne, Annie Lederman, Bob Forrest, Moshe Kasher, and The Voice winner Adam David. As always with Dopey, expect fan favorites, unexpected moments, and a few surprises along the way.

What began almost ten years ago in a cramped Lower East Side apartment as a side project between two friends — Manheim and co-founder Chris — has grown into a global community of listeners who find solace and connection in the podcast’s darkly humorous take on addiction. Tragically, Chris passed away in 2018 from a fentanyl overdose, but Manheim carried on with the show, which now boasts close to 20 million downloads.

“This is the biggest Dopey thing we’ve ever pulled off,” Manheim said. “Chris and I started this as a joke. After he died, it became something way more real. This show is for him, for everyone who’s still struggling, and for anyone who ever felt like they didn’t belong.”

Dopey events — often dubbed “DopeyCons” — have typically taken place in New York in the fall, but this marks the first full-scale event in Los Angeles. Plans for a California show had long been in motion, though earlier efforts to launch it in January were delayed due to the Pacific Palisades and Altadena wildfires.

Now, after years of buildup, Dopeywood is set to be a true West Coast homecoming, with a lineup packed with notable Californians deeply connected to both recovery and entertainment.

“It’s very California-centric,” Manheim said in a recent interview. “We’ve got all these people who are really big in the recovery community here. It’s going to be amazing.”

But what makes Dopeywood different isn’t just its big-name guests. It’s the spirit behind it — a blend of brutal honesty, ridiculous storytelling, and dark humor that refuses to sugarcoat addiction, but also refuses to let it steal all the joy.

“Well, what we always try to do is keep addicts and alcoholics company and create a place where they have fun,” Manheim explained. “It’s not about how to save your life or even how to change your life. It’s about staying together and having fun. And then, if you can do those things, chances are you can save your life and change your life.”

That ethos is what sets Dopey apart from other recovery content. It’s not a self-help seminar. It’s a space where people tell the most outrageous, heartbreaking, and hilarious stories, and then get to laugh together in the aftermath.

“The only reason I do this whole thing is because I love it,” Manheim added. “It’s the community, it’s the stories, and it’s the people who keep showing up.”

Manheim anticipates the Los Angeles show will draw the biggest crowd yet — a testament to how deeply the podcast has resonated across recovery circles, comedy fans, and anyone who has ever found themselves on the messy edge of life.

Tickets for Dopeywood are on sale now and can be purchased at tickettailor.com.

As the official invite says: “Let your freak flag fly, LA. Come be part of it.”
