The Gold is inspired by the true story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw the theft of £26 million worth of gold bullion and the decades-long chain of events which followed.

The BBC One series picks up events after season one and the convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold.

Season two explores some of the theories around what happened to the other half.

Who is in the cast of The Gold season 2?

Hugh Bonneville stars as DCI Brian Boyce, who led the investigation into the Brink’s-Mat robbery.

“His attitude changes, though, as he acknowledges in his own taciturn way that they are good at their jobs.”

He has also starred in the films Notting Hill, Iris, The Monuments Men, To Olivia and the Paddington movies.

Emun Elliott

Emun Elliott plays DI Tony Brightwell, who is part of the task force investigating the Brink’s-Mat robbery.

He added: “His connection with Brian Boyce and Nicki Jennings is much deeper and stronger.”

He has also starred as Brance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Robert Weekes in Tell It To The Bees.

Spencer said: “Jennings in this series has got into her groove a bit more, she’s more comfortable with herself now and understands the job and what’s she’s doing.”

Tom Cullen

Tom Cullen appears as John Palmer, the only one to be found not guilty at the Old Bailey trial for his part in the Brink’s-Mat robbery.

“We pick him up at his kind of zenith.

Welsh actor Cullen, 39, roise to fame for his role in the 2011 film Weekend.

Parts of East Sussex were used for some of the location shots, including the village of Firle. The coastal resorts of Hastings and St Leonards were also part of the scenery.

Crews also headed overseas to Tenerife and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands for scenes showing the hunt for John Palmer and to the streets of Madrid as the investigation became an international one.

Emun Elliot said: “Series one was very much London centric, although there was a tiny little bit where Jennings and Brightwell nip off to Sierra Leone for around a day and there’s a little bit on the south coast of Spain.

When is The Gold season 2 on and how many episodes are there?

The Gold will return to BBC One for a second season on Sunday 8 June from 9pm.

There are six episodes in total in the second season and all will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Sunday 8 June.
