A man wanted on suspicion of killing a Grossmont College student during a jealous rage in Lincoln Park is being held following his arrest in Mexico, police said Wednesday.
Julio Mendez, 35, is accused of the stabbing death of Sonny Carrillo, 20, on the night of July 29, 2011, according to the San Diego Police Department.
A warrant for Mendez’s arrest was obtained the following month. But it took investigators nearly 14 years to track him down.
The U.S. Marshals Service located Mendez in Mexico, and he was extradited back to San Diego and booked into county jail on a murder charge, SDPD said in a news release.
On the night of the killing, patrol officers responding to a report of an assault found Carrillo suffering from a stab wound to the chest outside an apartment complex in the 200 block of 47th Street.
Paramedics took him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Carrillo had driven a female friend, who shared a child with Mendez, to the complex so she could leave the youngster with him. Mendez resided there, investigators said.
But the suspect became angry during the exchange , and demanded to know who the man was in the car “waiting for her,” then allegedly walked up to the vehicle, reached through an open window and stabbed Carrillo. He then fled, police told news crews at the time.
Mendez at San Diego Central Jail since Tuesday, is being held without bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Friday.
