The winners of the upcoming Club World Cup will be allowed to wear a special champions badge on their shirt until 2029.
Manchester City and Chelsea will be among the 32 teams taking part in the revamped FIFA tournament, which gets underway in the USA on June 14.
City’s kit has displayed a golden FIFA Club World Cup badge for the last two seasonsGetty And this is the badge that will be worn on the winning club’s jerseyFabrizio RomanoAnd the inaugural champion of the expanded competition will get to keep the winners’ crest on their shirts for the next four years with the design of it being revealed by Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday.
Clubs were previously given permission to wear the addition to their jersey for 12 months, reflecting the annual staging of the event.
But the switch to a new format sees the rules change, with this summer’s winners set to become reigning champions until the next edition in 2029.
After winning the old version of the tournament in 2023, the Citizens have boasted a gold plate on their sky blue strip, with the FIFA Intercontinental Cup taking the event’s place in 2024.
The possibility of donning the world champions patch for the next four years will serve as huge motivation for all clubs to clinch glory in the US.
But perhaps none more so than Chelsea and City, with this presenting an opportunity to rub rivals Liverpool‘s noses in it.
That is because the Reds barely got to wear the commemorate badge when they were crowned Club World Cup Champions in 2019.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side followed up their Champions League triumph the previous season with victory over Brazilian outfit Flamengo in the intercontinental tournament seven months later.
And while Man City wore the golden patch with immediate effect after their win, Liverpool could not say the same.
GettyAs well as a prestigious badge, 32 teams will compete to lift the new Club World Cup trophy[/caption] Liverpool were allowed to wear the competition winners’ patch for just one Premier League game against Wolves in December 2019GettyIn fact, they only wore the golden patch on their shirts on a handful of occasions due to a rule on kits in England.
At the time, the Premier League stated that kit changes – including new badges being added to existing shirts – could not be made during the campaign.
That differed from the rules elsewhere in Europe, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich remembered for displaying it proudly on their kits.
Liverpool were free to wear the gold badge during their Champions League campaign, but Premier League rules meant they were permitted to display the world champion logo for just one domestic game.
However, the rule was later changed and Chelsea were allowed to wear the badge on their shirts when they won the competition in 2021, leaving the Anfield faithful feeling hard done by.
And their fury was only compounded two years later when it was confirmed City would be allowed to add the golden logo to their kit.

Qualification for the Club World Cup is restricted to the winners of the respective confederations’ top club competitions between 2021 and 2024, as well as there being a two-team-per-nation rule.
This leaves the Reds to watch some huge names battle it out for the £100million prize money, including Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Other European teams taking part include Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, as well as newly-crowned European champions Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, and Juventus will also take part.
Elsewhere, Lionel Messi‘s Inter Miami were awarded the host country spot after winning the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
