TV CHIEFS fear the NBA Finals will suffer record low ratings after the Thunder-Pacers clash was dubbed “one of the biggest mismatches in history.”
Oklahoma City and Indiana are set to collide for the 2025 NBA title after winning their respective conferences.
GettyThere are fears that the Thunder-Paces NBA final could bring in record-low TV ratings[/caption]The two sides boast a number of big-name stars capable of lighting up any court.
However, fans believe it could be one of the most one-sided basketball games ever.
The Pacers were a surprise package as they saw off the Bucks, the Cavaliers and the Knicks in the playoff round.
Meanwhile, the Thunder made light work of the Grizzlies, the Nuggets and the Timberwolves.
And as a result, they are overwhelming favourites, with one observer declaring their game against the Pacers to be “one of the biggest mismatches in history.”
Now, Front Office Sports claims this could have a knock-on effect when it comes to TV ratings.
Viewership has been steadily declining since 2000, when around 17.5million would tune in for the finals.
That peaked to around 20m in 2017 before suffering a sharp decline to roughly 7m just three years later.
Those numbers have gradually picked back up against since, albeit to levels of around 11m.
But the “mismatch” between the Pacers and the Thunder could see more fans continue to tune out.
While according to Nielsen, Indiana and Oklahoma City also have two of the smallest US television markets in the NBA.
And that could make for a perfect storm of low viewers.
The bookies also favour the Thunder to win in five games, while there is also a huge market for them to produce a clean sweep.
It means that for interest in the finals to pick up, the Pacers are likely needed to win a game early on.
But their record so far proves that if one side in the NBA can do it, it’s them.
