A rainbow flag was raised Monday in front of the Mendocino County Administration building in honor of Pride Month after the Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation declaring June of 2025 as “LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Mendocino County.”

“I thank supervisors (Maureen) Mulheren and (John) Haschak in particular for sponsoring the effort to acknowledge the important history and contributions of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people in this county,” Kim Bancroft told the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors on May 20, referring to a proclamation that the board later approved as part of its Consent Calendar that declared June 2025 as Gay Pride Month.

“Like many other minority communities, the LGBTQ community had to struggle for its rights in the late ’60s and on,” Bancroft said. “No longer need we tolerate being jailed, locked up in asylums, hiding behind lies, or succumbing to suicide or even murder. Though many LGBTQ folks must still confront prejudice and hatred… most of us can live in relative peace, here in this supportive community and county: We are teachers, medical practitioners, social workers, pastors, builders, farmers, food servers, chefs, lawyers, accountants, homemakers, artists, and maybe even supervisors, in the past.

“We are the grandparents, parents and children of Mendocino County, and we simply want to live in peace like everyone else,” Bancroft continued. “And that will be easier when we know our county leaders, all of you, stand with us and behind us, unlike in other areas of this great nation where gay people still live in fear.

“This county, to honor Gay people in this way, means you are also educating people around the country, who will learn that you are not afraid to be our allies,” Bancroft concluded. “In this time of pushback against the decency of justice for all minority groups in this country, you are bringing great pride and honor to Mendocino County by flying the flag, and acknowledging this history – thank you so much.”

The board then approved the proclamation, and the “flying of the Pride Flag” at the administration center at 501 Low Gap Road in Ukiah, as part of the Consent Calendar.

County policy states that “the Board of Supervisors may authorize the display of flags other than the national flag or state flag (“ceremonial flags”), in conjunction with official actions, ceremonial items, or proclamations of the Board of Supervisors, as an expression of the county’s official sentiments.”
