During Costco’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call, CEO Ron Vachris reportedly announced that the retailer is piloting a new checkout process aimed at speeding up transactions.
“We’ve also engaged in some ‘Scan & Go done by Costco’ tests that have been extremely successful in moving people through lines and expediting transactions,” Vachris said during the call. “The early results have been very positive, with great adoption from our members.”
While the idea isn’t entirely new—Sam’s Club has had similar technology in place for years—it marks a major step forward for Costco.
According to Costco’s website, their new system works by letting customers scan barcodes as they shop, creating a digital cart. When they're done, shoppers can pay directly in the app or scan a QR code at a Scan & Pay kiosk to complete the purchase.
CFO Gary Millerchip also weighed in on the new tech, emphasizing that this is just the beginning of Costco’s digital evolution.
“We believe there’s still significant opportunity to increase digital engagement with our members,” Millerchip said. “We see a long runway for continued growth in this area.”
