All eyes are on the Cleveland Browns and their crowded quarterback room heading into 2025.
Intrigue surrounds the franchise ahead of the new NFL season, given the unit looks completely different from what it was 12 months ago.
The Browns have a crowded QB room that includes Sanders and GabrielGettyVeteran Joe Flacco has returned to provide the experience, and behind him are former first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett, and two rookies in Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Deshaun Watson is still around, but is expected to miss a chunk of the season through injury, and the $230million signal caller may never play for the Browns again.
With so much competition at quarterback, it will quickly become sink or swim in Cleveland.
And it seems both Sanders and Gabriel are relishing the challenge.
On Monday, as the Browns continued their offseason workouts, Shedeur offered a three-word message to his social media following.
“Thank you GOD,” he wrote on X, having also been lauded by fans for his response to Flacco’s ‘mentor’ warning.
Gabriel, meanwhile, made it clear that he is also embracing the competition.
“I’m loving it,” he told reporters.
“Been a lot of fun. A lot of learning. As you know, just with change, there’s things day-to-day that you just have to adjust to.
“There’s no way around it. From this point on, I think you just know how to get into your routine a little quicker… just to your new normal.
Gabriel is relishing QB competition in Cleveland, and represents the Browns’ futureGetty Sanders also offered a three-word message amid Browns OTAs this weekGetty“But I’d say I sped up a lot better after being in three different spots in college. So that’s helped me for sure.”
Gabriel, who finished his college career with Oregon, also admitted that NFL play-calling and learning from a new offensive coordinator is a completely different world.
“Initially, you’re piecing it together and words don’t really mean much,” the 24-year-old continued.
“But now, as we kind of dive into it, it’s a lot easier, knowing what these words mean. I have (called plays a lot in the huddle) and in college, it honestly helped getting kind of the audio in that sense because a lot of it was visual.
“Now you have a voice in your head that’s got to paint a picture for you.”
While Gabriel is relishing the competition at quarterback, and Sanders is already showing promise in on-field drills by breaking NFL records, one Browns veteran is in no mood to wait for these young stars to adapt to the league.
Bitonio has made it clear to Cleveland’s rookies that he wants to win nowGettyIf all goes well, those two draft prospects will be the future in Cleveland, but offensive lineman Joel Bitonio is focused on winning now.
He has made it clear that he wants the best player — whoever that might be — to start under center in Week 1.
“We want the best player to compete and, you know, we understand the team has a responsibility to the future years,” 10-year veteran Bitonio said.
“But I think as the season starts, we’re going to put the best players on the field and try to win as many games as possible.”
Super Bowl winner Flacco, of course, is by far the most experienced quarterback on the roster and the presumed Week 1 starter.
He is entering his 18th season, and has played 196 games to date in the NFL.
Pickett, meanwhile, has a more modest 25 starts to his name, having featured for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles before arriving in Cleveland.
Both rookies will be hoping to play their first pro games in 2025.
Flacco is the presumed Week 1 starter, but the Browns will need him firing quicklyGettyIn the coming months, the Browns will decide which QB offers them the best chance of competing this season, but after finishing with a dismal 3-14 record in 2024, there will be little room for error.
