Search and Rescue volunteers from several law enforcement agencies across Northern California participated in helicopter training held at Lake Mendocino last weekend.
Hosted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with Napa County, CALSTAR, and Marin County Search and Rescue, the three-day training held from Friday, May 30, through Sunday, June 1, was designed to give rescuers “training on how to safely work around helicopters, (including) courses on helicopter loading and unloading, litter loading, hoist training for insertion and extraction, water rescue, wilderness landing zone selection and deployment, and airborne searching tactics and methods.”
When the first such event was hosted at the lake in 2016, an MCSO employee said at the time that the training included helicopter “familiarization flights” designed to have members of several different agencies get not only used to each other, but to the equipment they use, as well.
That first event also featured such basic facts as who to call to request a helicopter, and what kind/size helicopter would be best for the job.
In subsequent events, the MCSO reported that its main goal “was to train all of their search and rescue volunteers with the tools available to make them better prepared to deal with all the different variables that come with search operations, (such as) how to get rescued people onto helicopters, finding and tracking people, and getting instructions on the best and safest search and rescue practices (in the hopes of getting) people to locations to search faster and rescue people sooner.”
This year, the training was attended by personnel from nine counties other than Mendocino: Alameda, Contra Costa, Glenn, Lake, Marin, Nevada, Placer, San Mateo and Solano. The equipment used included helicopters from Cal Fire, REACH, the U.S. Coast Guard and Sonoma County.
