Evans police say they found 139 meth pipes in an SUV driven by a 48-year-old Denver man during a traffic stop last week near U.S. 85.

Officers pulled the man over late Thursday night in the 3300 block of west Service Road, according to an affidavit for the man’s arrest. Police said the man drove onto a road that had been blocked off for construction and that the SUV’s temporary license plate had expired.

Police said, after talking with the driver, they learned he was wanted by the Denver Marshal’s Office on a misdemeanor warrant and asked him to step out of the vehicle. Police said, when he did, both officers noticed a small bag of what appeared to be meth on the ground near the man’s foot.

The man initially denied any knowledge of the bag but eventually admitted that it was “probably” his and had likely fallen out of his pants when he got out of the SUV. One officer opened the driver’s side door and noticed two meth pipes containing residue in the center console, according to the affidavit.

Police said, in total, they found 139 glass meth pipes in the vehicle, along with burnt foil and straws consistent with smoking fentanyl. Officers also found more bags, one of which contained more suspected meth, according to the affidavit.

Police said the suspected meth in both bags tested presumptive positive.

The man faces a misdemeanor for drug possession and a drug petty offense for the pipes and other paraphernalia. He was released from the Weld County jail Friday on $3,000 bond ahead of a pretrial conference July 29 in Weld district court.
