A MCDONALD’S customer has vented their frustrations after spotting a notable price hike on a fan-favorite burger, surging from just $1.50 to $4 over the span of a few years.

Other diners, however, pointed out an easy and free way to drop the price of the iconic McDouble.

Fast food has been around since the inception of the first White Castle spot in 1916 in Kansas, where hamburgers were sold for just five cents each.

Quick service, consistent taste, and cheap food have been staples of the fast food industry over the decades, although consumers have noticed the latter factor taking a dip in recent years.

Inflation has spiked the price of fast food across the board, taking a hit to beloved classics.

For example, the cost of McDonald’s iconic McDouble has more than doubled in under 10 years, according to a fan on X.

“I’ve stopped eating McDoubles because the price is ridiculous,” wrote the customer.

They explained that the hamburger – made with two patties, cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard – used to be a “great deal,” priced at roughly $1.50 in 2017.

“During COVID, they raised it up to around $2.50. Now they’re over $4 each,” fumed the McDonald’s fan.

They argued that the burger was now “no longer worth it at all” and expressed surprise that McDonald’s menu price increases had not hurt the chain.

“There are no longer cheap options at McDonald’s, and that’s the whole reason people go there,” they said.

Fellow McDonald’s fans in the comments section shared an easy trick for combatting the price hikes – using the chain’s app.

McDonald’s fans can make a free account via its app and access a variety of deals.

“They always have McDouble or Double Cheeseburger deals on the app. Last time I went to McDonald’s, they were buy one get one free,” commented one customer.

Another foodie agreed, noting that the sandwiches were frequently $1 on the app.

FAST FOOD FURY

The average price of the iconic fast food chain’s food has risen by 40% since 2019, according to McDonald’s, which said that was in line with inflation.

Fast Food meal deals

Here are some of the current value meals offered by popular fast food joints.

McDonald’s $5 Meal Deal:

Wendy’s $5 Biggie Bag:

Burger King’s $5 Your Way Meal:

The company, however, was not alone when it raised the price of popular items such as the McDouble, Chicken McNuggets, and french fries.

Many other fast food spots have hiked their menu prices, prompting backlash from customers who relied on them for quick, cheap, and accessible meals.

“I cannot bring myself to spend more than $10 on a fast food meal, so I never buy it anymore,” complained one Reddit user.

“I used to get fast food at least once a week…and the prices are just significantly higher now,” said another diner. “I’ve basically cut it entirely out.”

Many diners have started turning to casual dining chains for eating out, arguing that the price is similar but you receive higher quality food and better service.

DINER DEALS

As fast food joints continued to raise their prices, many are working to lure in diners with tempting deals.

For example, Wendy’s offered up a mouthwatering deal last week in honor of National Hamburger Day on May 28, serving Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers for just one cent with any purchase.

A long list of restaurants served up the savings on the faux holiday, including Burger King, Sonic, Arby’s, Perkins, Red Robin, Shake Shack, and more.

Wendy’s, however, extended its one-cent deal past May 28, leaving the offer on the table through June 1.

The offer kicked off the chain’s 100 Days of Savings promotions, during which Wendy’s will be offering new weekly deals on its mobile app.

One of the juicy deals starts on June 7, when customers can get their hands on a Dave’s Single for $1 with any purchase every Saturday through July 26.

Other fast food chains are similarly taking advantage of promotions to draw in foodies.

For example, McDonald’s is still offering its popular meal deal – the chain revealed when it will leave the menu but refused to explain what’s next.

KFC also launched a $5 chicken meal deal to rival McDonald’s and customers screamed it’s a “deal for real.”
