Kentucky found a way to put itself into a great spot at the Clemson Regional Sunday night, looking to force a winner-take-all Game 7 vs. West Virginia. However, it all evaporated in the span of 1 inning, and the Wildcats were bounced from the NCAA Tournament as a result.
The Wildcats opened the regional round with a hard-fought loss to West Virginia, but the program showed a great ability to bounce back. Kentucky beat USC Upstate and blew out regional host Clemson in an elimination game to reach the regional finals and a rematch vs. the Mountaineers.
After the early loss, Kentucky needed to win 2 games and advance. And early on, the Wildcats were mashing with a run scored in every inning from the 2nd through the 6th. West Virginia was not quiet in that stretch with a 6-run 4th inning to keep things close.
Devin Burkes homered in the 8th inning to give Kentucky a 12-7 lead and was a leader for the offense with 3 RBI. Cole Hage and Hudson Brown also had 3 RBI as the Wildcats racked up 13 hits and 10 walks.
Unfortunately, it all came crumbling down in the bottom of the 8th inning, and all the scoring damage came with 2 outs in the inning. The Mountaineers saw 7 straight batters reach with 6 runs scoring, all while Kentucky cycled through 5 different pitchers in search of the 3rd out.
Here was the pivotal go-ahead base hit for West Virginia:

Kentucky would get the tying run on base in the top of the 9th, but the Wildcats were unable to do anything with it. The season-ending collapse ended with the 13-12 defeat, putting an especially sour exclamation point on the season.
It will be a tough pill to swallow the program after back-to-back trips to the Super Regionals, including a trip to the College World Series a season ago.
